Help & opinions --> diff replacement

Post by Swaney »

Well the rear diff (4.5 ratio) in my LN65 is poked - its been making bad wrrrring noises for awhile. Took diff head out and found out why.. one of the gear rings has bad damage - 1 in 8 teeth are prolly 1/2 missing or munched down badly, bearings and seals are also poked.

My orginally plan was to look at replacing gear ring and dropping in a lock right locker.. however after having the dif shop look at it they told me i was better off buying a recon'd second hand one and using that as the one outta the truck is pretty much rubbish.

So now im in two minds.. i can pick up an secondhand LSD diff off a mate for $400~ish (just gotta check the ratios first) and put that in and spend my locker money on the front diff... or I could hunt out an open diff and do the locker and worry about the front in the future.

What would you do if it was your truck? Does anyone know where any rear 4.5 diff's are selling at a reasonable price?

Thanks heaps in advance for your help!

A 4.5 LSD just sold on TM for $265, so $400 sounds a bit steep.
Depends on what you use the truck for, if you do lots of around town driving lockright can be a bit annoying so maybe better to have LSD in the rear and locker in the front. If you do lots of off road I think you are better to have locker in the rear as you are more likely to cock a rear wheel unless you have lots of gear in the back.
Need to also remember that used LSD's won't provide much benifit unless they have been recently tightened.
If you got a 4 pinion open diff I have got some new Lockrights.

Cheers for all your help.. ended up replacing both diff's... got one from a V6 1996 lux - which is going in my rear with a lockright and got another good 2nd hand diff (was cheaper than rebuilding mine - hope i dont regret this) for the front which im also putting a locker in... aww yea 4 wheels will be turning :)

now I just have to explain the credit card bill..lol
