Hi after a bit of help, am looking at getting a lsd center for the front of my kzj78 prado,
It has the 8" high pinion. I have been told I can drop a standard center in but there are 2 different bearing sizes. does anyone know which size my diff has and that it is a drop in?
thanks for the help

Put a Lock-Right in it
WAY Way better.
Not had any problems with my KZJ-71 and at this time of year it tends to be putting an inch of gravel into the trailer from the 4 chains throwing rocks. Thats in about a mile of total wheelspin in about 2 to 3 feet of snow. Does not have an easy life. The steering lock remains the same too unless you keep your foot well up it in the middle of turns.
When I did mine we had to change the bearings but that is cos I went to a rear 4 pinion style locker assembly. (stronger) I think the inner races got bigger from memory - long time ago...
Anyways it is possible, you just need to measure things up and go to a bearing company.

if u go to std hilux diff head ull need to change your steering.
put lockright in as icedj said. i had one in my ifs front diff it didnt give me any problems turning unless u kept the boot up it while turning hard.
huge improvement over standard it was a whole new truck

I'm looking at just doing the center not diff head, and I'm going to get the lsd turned into a 90% locker that is selectable. I just need to know the side bearing size on the standard high pinion so I can get it, if no one can help will have to pull it appart just to check the size.

Ahh Interesting
If you take your axle code (firewall) to Toyota they should be able to tell you the bearing numbers, therefore you will be able to compare those to the numbers on the carrier you intend to use.
In the tech section under WjW's stuff there will be a site to sort some of this info I think.

How is the LSD being turned into a selectable one at 90% locked? I am interested to know more.....
Is this through Brian Howatt in Wellington who makes hydraulic lockers? My experience of a very cool crushing machine that he made at Scott Base, suggests he is a thinking engineer.

yes looking at hydraulic locker by Brian Howat. Have heard very good things from someone who has just done one, still not cheap but sounds like a fantastic bit of kiwi engineering. And in my book why spend money on a china, aussie, american or other locker when I can get Kiwi made.(or at least Kiwi changed, made better.)
I like to support locals where I can
