Re: Norwest winch challenge tonight on sky
It was actually one of the best ones yet imo.
And im not saying I could do better..I couldn't...........and more to the point- I couldn't be bothered ever trying and then dealing with the subsequent failure............but...............
They should stop using that theme song. Its shit. I got upset today because the remote was refusing to mute that crap out.
And..
When they are actually showing something cool they should quit the arty camera work and instead do some decent shots that i can actually perv at. Like with that sweet FJ40. They kept doing closeups on like.. tail light/wheel/tail light/headlight/arty shot from down low/up high/ down low/closeup down low/closeup up high/repeat.
Why not some dude walking around the car slowly with a camera and maybe sticking the camera under the thing/inside so we can actually have a decent look at it without getting near motion sickness.
It must be hard finding content to fill the show AND sponsorship to make it possible but even then- they do not need to keep breaking up the actual content with their shitty 4wdtv song and narration. You are already watching the show. Why do they need to promote it further? Also- who the #### cares about some dude with some gay shiny prado who wins some shit. MY GOD they draw that shit out.
"heyyy, my names bob, i own a prado. I can drive it on long grass."
Lets all watch bob drive it around on the long grass.
"YAY for bob he wins a hat! a beer insulator! another hat! A gay magazine you'll never read! fix your own windscreen kit! Another gay magazine you'll never read! a snatch strap (not bad
) Another magazine for the fire! A coffee mug! A free hat! TWO FREE COFFEE's VOUCHER!!!!"
Then lets watch him drive it around on the grass some more.
I could be wrong. If anyone knows any better please correct me- but those prizes are given by the supplier so that they get their name shown in tv for like 3 seconds. The supplier probably (could be wrong) does not give any other form of show sponsorship.
The show probably accepts these prizes because they think that free shit will make people tune in.
well.... I dont watch this program for the remote chance of free shit. You have a greater chance of being invited into some golden shower orgy event by the queen.
They could replace that with 5 minutes of actual cool stuff and NOBODY would complain.
Every time the program comes on im like " dad come watch this!" and then after 20 seconds of something sweet (like that v8 wrangler) there is 5 minutes of bs and i feel bad for making him leave his chair.
-Nathan
Ps. 4wdbits is all good. They seem look after me
but I personally believe that one add is PLENTY within 30 minutes.
And get them to fix the near epilepsy inducing flashing graphics
It must be the FPS being incorrect or something? Or does that only happen to me on my tv?
And im not saying I could do better..I couldn't...........and more to the point- I couldn't be bothered ever trying and then dealing with the subsequent failure............but...............

Another magic post by Mr Brick
Well said. They do a good job, but its very advert orientated. They gotta eat like the rest of us, its cool that its payin the bill's for them, plus they have to drive/fly to the venue's to get their footage!!!!
It must be hard work to balence the books on a half an hour a week show!!!!
Totally agree with the camera work to. They show rock crawling. Can't see whats going on, because the camera keps flicking around all over the place. very hard to watch!!!!!
Do Aussies have Goldfish sized memories, so they think they will get bored if the shot stays the same for more that 0.2 of a second???
Cool show non the less, worth the time spent on the couch away from the shed!!!!
We're supporting them, we get the DVD's sentr out to us

The norwest episode is primo! (we got sent a pre-release dvd as my bro did all the club class filming)
Also, last I talked to Simon about money, they were making zero $'s of 4wdtv, the sponsors only just cover expenses. Simon and Miranda have another seasonal business that pays their bills, so you can't give them flack for looking after their sponsors - they're only doing what they can to keep their show afloat and promote the 4wd industry. And it's thanks to sponsors like 4wdbits that make it possible.

well there is another way to look at it
i watched a dvd of there's whole out on a job one night
and seriously after watching the first one .. ill never watch another
i don't appreciate something advertised as about 4wd's when really IMO its carefully grafted with 3-4 infomercials in it .. i mean seriously .. who buys a dvd of infomercials with about 5 mins of real content in it
perhaps they should up the price of advertising and minimise it accordingly
because ATM its not 4wd tv .. its sell you shit tv and for one ...
quality of show will bring more viewers and generate more profit for the sponsers ... were as they have to run the other way with the majority of there content been infomercials .. so nobody wants to watch it .. so they lose out on customer coverage
to put it in perspective
look at that show ... outdoors with jeff
that show is 100% sponsored .. its good and minimal advertising
4wdtv has the potential to be a great show
they just need to get a better balance

Re: Norwest winch challenge tonight on sky
I think you guys are missing the point (except Jeremy). Simon and Miranda put that show on because they love 4wding. They do it on a shoe string and the fly out to NZ to record our events and it quite often costs them. They then do all the editing etc (read $1000's) for free and get it all on air.
Yeah there are a lot of ads, but without them you could watch that other 4wd show that is on TV3. Oh wait a minute they had their sponsorship pulled as they treated every event organiser like crap and nobody would pay them the many $1000's they wanted to film your events.
So I say you can accept that having about 15 -20mins 4x4 and the rest ads is the price you have to pay. Don't like it, then see if there is anyone in any associated industry that will put their name to the whole show and fork out big money so they don't have to have lots of small ads (that add up to a lot).
I guess it is fair to criticise the 'art' type shots, as that is an opinion thing, but to complain about the ads that pay for the show is just plain stupid! Take the advertising out of it and then to get the events some of you race in on TV would mean adding a 0 to all entry fees! Good luck with that!
Some of you should think about the economic realities before you make stupid coments about things you don't understand.
And if you think I'm being a prick about this, then too bad. These guys do a hell of a lot for the sport in NZ and Oz and should be supported by us not criticised.
(and yes I'd like to have no ads but it can't happen)

lol, don't put me in that boat!!!!!
I get it, but there's nothing wrong with a critiquing the show!!!!!!
There is no doubt in my mind that given the choice, simon would pack the show full of hard wheeling, and poser shots of his 40!!!
But like i said, they gotta eat like the rest of us, so if selling a crap load of advertising helps keep them afloat, which ultimatly decides the future of the show, then its gotta be done. As the show grow's, they will be able to charge more for advertising, and also prune back the amount of airtime spent on them.
The best way for the show and their buisness to grow, is to support the crap out of them!!!!!!

mate i used it as a example of how advertising can be done ..
i put forward a statement about how i arnt intrested in watching 4wd tv because i dont like advertising shoved down my throat
support is buying product's from the vendors and buying the dvd's .. not forcing yourself to watch advertising on products you dont want (well maybe a couple)
15 mins of infomercial on a arb fridge was rediculious

Re: Norwest winch challenge tonight on sky
I watch the show and think its freakin cool that there is an actual 4x4 show on free to air. I also think at least the infomercials are informative and about 4x4 equipment.
I do how ever think if the shots were longer, or concentrated on one vehicle over an obstacle at a time, perhaps in the WRC vain, and commentary provided on information about the actual track. I also think if they changed the voice over guy to a diff person to the actual show that may break it up better.
But saying that, least its not on sky ppv and least its not American!

Actually............realised something today which made me feel real dumb. My first visit to 4wdbits.co.nz was after seeing those adds on TV
and i've since spent significant amounts (for me, atleast) of money there so they (the adds) obviously work pretty good.

Well you must know somthing that I dont and I was a party to a fair bit of the goings on and your comments are certainly different to my understandng of what happened
As for the show the other night, it was the first time I have watched any of there stuff and I was disappointed. Basically I didn't get to see any 4wding. Cameras leaping around all over the place, self advertising of the show that I'm watching, a theme soundtrack that will drive me to drink. I'm prepared to give it another go as it is a 4wding show, but if I cant see any wheeling or manage to focus on any of the action because the shots are long enough the I will vote with my remote
Cheers

lol, Im not making a comment about 4wd TV mainly because i've only got pleb TV and cant get Stratos so have no idea about the content anyway. Im presuming its similar to the content of the "free" DVD's that come with the Australian 4wd Action Mags, as in lots of commercials and advertising??

NO WAY!!!!!
I'm a huge fan of the australian 4wd action and 4wd custom action magazines and DVD's.
The DVDs in particular are REAL professional and full of useful information and ideas/cool custom truck reviews (like the unimog.. that things aweeeesome!)
Also a bloody good deal at $10 for 1 magazine + one back issue of the sister publication + the DVD.
