Hi guys, I have a 88 Safari shorty. It has created a lound knock/bang in the suspenion. It has started doing this after a nasty hole (not the only vehicle that got damaged in the hole!).
It mainly only does it off road but occasionally on the road.
I've been told it could be a bent shock, any idea's?
Thanks, Craig

Sounds like something binding then letting itself go. I would suspect the shock as well.

Re: Safari suspension knock
hi, is it in the front or the rear. i had a knocking noise in the front and found that the trailing arms ( i think thats what they called) from the chassie to the front diff, there bushes where worn out and causeing a knocking when on the likes of river beds.

Radius arms, never thought of that one.

Re: Safari suspension knock
I had a loud noise from under my saf that i thought was suspension and it ended up being the body mounts, had to remove 2 of them and cut 3-4mm of the steel insert off and noise dissappeared. it use to get worse when wet.
Re: Safari suspension knock
Will have a look at those things. It's hard to tell which end it is coming from, when driving it sounds like the front drivers side but when in the pasangers seat it sound like its somewhere in the back end!
The sway bar won't engage anymore so I'm wondering if it is that trying to engage but not holding. Might try taking the sway bar out.
Thanks again, any more advice would be much appreciated.

Check to see if the rear swaybar disconnect is attached. Mine broke off and whenever the back end articulated to much it hit with a hell of a bang.

I had the both sides under the front foot well, second in from the front off the truck, took me ages, could not work out what the noise was till another saf owner told me that he had had the same problem.
Re: Safari suspension knock
I removed the sway bar release and has got rid of the noise, has made the back end float round on the open road a bit tho.
Cheers for the idea's.

take the front one off as well and it won't feel so bad. You will get used to it and modify driving style accordingly. I hate getting into a vehicle that has them now, feels to rigid and violent when they turn.
