Project Lemon Front Axle & Steering

Post by De-Ranged »

Got the chance to do some more work on the beast... front axle is together lots of new bits CV's, Bearings, Seals, New second hand diffs (5.25-1) the steering arms and spacers.... :D :D

Got the axle on a set of 33's mounted into the chassi so I can sort the clearance for the engine and mount it and gearbox X member...

The Tie Rod is for real the Drag link is a mockup just sitting there so I can make certin the sump fits

Heres a comparason of the steering arms, old versus new

funky looking arms... is it neccessary to have the extra angle on the end for the drag link TRE to bolt into? Every way I've looked at it the angle just never seems to be enough to warrant having the step

Heres a couple of shots with the drag link balljoint in

I know my lift is a bit bigger than most, but the angle up for the draglink ball is 10deg and its still not sitting level, the range on most balljoints is only 30deg.... that means you'd have less than 5deg of downward movement before the balljoint starts to jam! I'll never use the full range of travel with the angle up but I know I'll never kill the joint from dropping the passanger wheel :D :D
 As ya can see I set them up as high lift theres about 50mm of clearance from tierod to spring 8) even with caster angle wedges in there to correct the wheel alignment there'll be plenty of clearance
Image
What you can't really see in this pic is the steering box is mounted and the draglink (white one) is attatched to the pitman arm balljoint, I haven't made up a proper draglink yet as I'm going to shorten the pitman arm and convert it to a tapered hole to take a standard balljoint with the shortened steering arms the standard pitman would speed up the steering to much 8) ...
Heres a good shot showing the angles and clearance

Might be some time before I get back to the Lemon as my Rover just got "green stickered" looks like I'm gona have to get it fixed first

$450+ GST, I do have a spare set madeup 8) also painted bright yellow, with POR15 undercoat :D but I'll warn ya these are extreme they are very short about half the length of standard and they are a big rise!!

Talking with Steve (SupraLux) they might be too extreme for a SAS'd surf, thats what you've got ???
I will (later in the yr when I've got time  ) build a set of jigs to do a less extreme set for the SAS guys

If your keen I'll go measure up, can't remember the dimensions (to many late nights doing tax  ) and we'll see if they fit ... you'll have to shorten your existing tierod by about 50mm and get it threaded (most engineering shops can do this) I've set the ball joint tapper on the arms to take the lux joints. If you want to beef it up the late model 97 beam axle hilux (also on 70+ series cruiser) balljoints have a larger threaded end for the tierod (21mm vs 18mm on early Lux)
I'll be doing up a shortened Pitman arm made to take a Hilux balljoint and Heavy Duty  Draglink for 21mm balljoints... won't be for a couple of weeks  gota get the Rover Legal first

Cheers Reece
