hi, have a 74 fj with a transfercase h/brake which is only just ok.
today on a club run, a 84 fj in the club has a handbrake which is direct to each rear wheel.
have come home and looked in manual and only see my type.
is his a fj 60 set up or something else.
( his worked and mine was not that good at all !!)
losing brakes warwick

later model 40s had the handbrake on the rears
unforunately your transfer case one is shite
I rebuilt mine, cleaned it, put new pads in etc etc etc, only to go out on the next trip and have it become useless after one or two mud/water holes
they are crap
you could try to adapt a disc setup instead of the drum
or change your rear brakes to discs and get a later model handbrake and connect it up

James here, Both my 83 and 84 FJ40's have the brake on the rear. Talk to me nicely and I could sell you the set up off the 83

I think it was about the last 2 years of FJ40's (1982-84) that had the handbrake on the rear wheels and the handbrake lever between the seats instead of the umbrella stick under the dash. There still shit handbrakes and need constant adjusting to keep holding
