70 Series Petrol Tacho???

Looking at the spare bits I have, I'm looking for a petrol Tacho off a 70 series...

(assuming that its the same size??), one in there at the moment is a diesel one which was running the 2LT.... Size off the current guage is 9.0cm high x 8.5cm wide x 2.5ish cm deep.... a factory guage would be nice as it means I can put another guage where the aftermarket tacho on the dash will sit (which is plan b)

The other option I have is to look at other petrol Toyota's, maybe the petrol guage is common on other models? If anyone has any ideas...., or does anyone know of any aftermarket guages around this size which may fit?
PS its connecting to the tacho feed off the link rather than the factory wiring ....

have a look in here, Jerry. It's one of my old build threads. I started with a cluster same as yours. I wasn't going to look like a boyracer with a dirty great autometer on the dash if i could help it.
http://www.gpforums.co.nz/thread/282879/?s=The only thing i was really looking for when i bought the gauge was the depth. I can't remember the part number, but it was just one of about 3 VDO units in my sparkie's parts book.
Other than that, it's pretty straight forward. Had a choice of backlight bulb colours, green, blue or red i think. You could put the missing lights in if you had more tools than i did. It is a bit hard to see at night.

i could be wrong here, but there should be no difference between a diesel and petrol rev counter apart from where they connect, eg:petrol connects to distributor to get signal and diesel connects somewhere else (don't know much about diesels).
the problem you'll have is getting the rev counter to show correct revs if it's meant for a 4 cylinder and you've repowered with a 6 or 8.
i'd talk to an auto electrician before i dicked around with it or spent money on it.

Yup. it can be done, but it's a shit of a thing to sort, and expensive too. Problem is a tacho designed for a petrol works off sensing a spark
And diesels don't have spark.

marks adapters make an interface for $165 aus to make the factory tach work for a v8 conversion.
There's probably a local solution.

i wonder how they get around the tacho not reading high enough? seeing as most people set their 1-UZ rev limit at 6500-7000rpm.

probably only good on a yank v8.
are there any standard toyota 4x4 engines that red line at 6500- 7000rpm?

The early links have a low voltage output on the tach from the ECU wheras the factory petrol clusters usually require a high voltage signal so you need to pick that up from the coil.
The Hilux tachs are adjustable which means they can be calibrated.
Matt.

I noticed a lot of people are looking for the potentiometer value for making the 6cyl FJ60-62 tach work on a V8. Here is a picture of the install. The pot value is 200ohm. You only use 2 out of 3 lugs. The outer as you maybe can't see, is not used. Attach an aftermarket tach and calibrate yours as needed.
Gary

Probably wont help you Jerry but the pot value to re-calibrate a factory 6cyl tacho to run on an 8cyl engine is 200ohms
