Will I have warrant issues?

Post by Dodgysam »

Ok, so im wanting to mount up a set of bullbars/skid plates on the truck.
But i have a couple of questions before i start hacking into things.

My ute has airbags so can i modify the front bumper at all, or does it have to be left as is?

The type of bars im wanting to make up are pretty much the same as the ones in the pics so basically im wanting to know if i will have any trouble with warrants etc and will I need to get it certified etc etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

You are going to have to prove that your bar is airbag compatable ie fit your bar and have it crash tested in a approved lab the only one of which is in aus you could just remove it at wof time but and its a biggy your insurence would be void and mr plod will be havin a up close chat if you have a prang :D

You may also find that designed wrong and a seemingly small wack could deform the chassis enough to set off the air bags.

Can't you get airbags removed properly and get a cert for it?
Or aliarc make make bullbars for airbag vehicles. Do custom made ones also

i dont think you are allowed to remove saftey items, certainly air bags if fitted or been fitten need to be in a functioning condition for wofs. best to go to a supplier who has paid the coin for testing.

I do hope my airbag does work the day I need it. It may be fitted but how can they actually tell it is going to work.

Having an airbag was not something I thought about when buying the jeep :? , now makes me realise it would have been better to not have one when buying a vehicle for modifying.

i do believe that you can remove airbags legally, but only for designated motorsport vehicles, and its a pain in the ass, and there`s a whole lot of paperwork involved.. in short buy an arb/bag compatible bar and be done with it

Got the same issue with my 90 series Prado.

As all have said, you will need an airbag compatible bar.

Just to clear it up to everyone, you CANNOT remove your airbags for a road going vehicle with just an LVV certification, you would need a minimum 6point roll cage and motorsport licence
I looked into this for my race car a while ago... same will apply for any form of motorvehicle

Isn't there something about a bar not projecting forward?

Interesting topic, the ARB bumper for the jeep is advertised as airbag compatible so that is the main reason that it is allowed, nothing to do with it changing the function of the frontal impact crumple zone.

In one document on the LTSA site I found reference that an airbag can be removed from a vehicle if it more than 14 years since it was first registered in 'any' country - so my 1995 Jeep would qualify me thinks. It does go onto say that it must then be certified as LVV, which I would have to do when I lift the suspension, and put on bigger tyres. So there might be scope for me yet, looks like it is time to talk to a certified certifier

There is also the theory that if the nudge bar is attatched to the original bumper mounts and the chassis is not altered in any way then its ok mine is done like this and has no wof issues :?:
