A question about snorkels...

Post by Dodgysam »

So I admit it...Im a tight @$$.

I dont wanna pay the big bucks for a "store bought" snorkel so im gonna make my own.
What is the best metal to make one out of?
If its steel is it better to be stainless or is mild just fine and dandy?
Or is Ali better?
Is A plastic or fibreglass...(hell i can even do carbon fibre)...one better?

So thanks in advance for your input and i will keep you upto date if its made from something special.

Really Depends on your time, effort, skill, cost.

But mild steel will be fine, just paint it nicely.

The only one there that I dont have is the dollars...(damn alternator packed up today so there goes this weekends trip to vegas with the bike).
The time i have. The effort i can put in and the skill isnt a problem...(I got skills)

But thanks for the input. I think mild steel would by far be the easiest but i figured it would be better to ask than to charge on into it and do something HORRENDOUSLY wrong.

people always go on about a stainless being better but unless you can fab it up yourself or know someone who will do it supercheap it would probably cost much the same as a storebought one. one cheaper stainless option is to use strait tubes and use nylon bends like intercooler connecters . still pricey but cheaper than getting it tigged up. and then mild steel can be welded up by just about anyone from exhaust tube. coat of paint and all done, one thing to think of is rusting on the inside but it still would have to get past the filter to be a problem

tig welding stainless/mild or ali isnt a problem as i do a fair bit at work.

Also when i make up the mouth/head/top bit would it make a difference if i put a primary filter up there aswell or is that just overkill?

sweet you got it sorted then. where in nz is you?? i would like to see a fabbed top piece. some buy the plastic bit up the top off trademe. but a home jobbie could be a lot cooler imo  . im still thinking ss would be the go for me. ill just order in the tube at work then convince the boss he owes me something for not having a sick day off for 3 years   not sure about a prim filter unless you in very dusty area. long distance dry dirt road convoy or something maybe, in oz they use them a bit

last one i did cost me less than $50, two 3 inch 90 degree bends and a bit of 3 inch straight, bing bang and it was done. Nothing wrong with that option ill be doing it again on my new truck.

It was a pretty rough job and my first one. I planned on adjusting it a bit but the truck was build on a 1000 dollar budget and i really didn't care what it looked like  . Im sure someone who does it for a job like yourself could do a pretty nice job. You can buy snorkel hats as well but they were worth more than my whole snork so i never bothered.

it was a 90 out of the gaurd and the others i just guessed, just did it by eye and if i can do it anyone can. Just tack each bend as you go and keep trying it on to make sure you have it right, don't wana find its half over your window, or to far the other way and your door doesn't open
