Laminated body panels

Post by suzukisam »

Hi folks, I am thinking aloud here, just thinking about laminating some panel steel in behind my steel flares to make the effective panel thickness greater and hence stronger. I use the flares as sliders on rough tracks. The suzuki flares are pretty tough but on my last trip up Thompsons track one got shoved in a bit.

Any ideas on how I could get some more steel into the back of them to make them stronger?

I guess some sort of body filler between the original skin then beat a new bit of steel in.

Any ideas welcome.

I know you've probaly already done something by now but this might help out someone else thinking of the same thing
And they do say better late than never.....

Anyway there might be a better alternative to all that work laminating steel in by the way using steel will create a rust problem as moisture works its way between the layers

The other option is using Newtec putty it's got fiber glass in it and when its set it NEEDS a grinder to work, F__ken tuff stuff, drill some large'ish holes right through the fender clear all paint so it can "key" to the metal on both sides of the fender and push the putty through from the inside and spread the outside along the pannel, you only need a few mil on the outside of the pannel. This lets the glass fibers "key" through the pannel and provides a hell of a lot of support.

Steel sucks - go fibreglass panels.

By the time you have added enough steel to stop it deforming under a decent hit the damn thing will be too heavy... And the suzuki's biggest advantage is being light weight....

I vote for total f-glass replacements or cut the damn things off all together...

the latest plan is to repair the dents if i ever sell it. the flares are probably the strongest panel on the vehicle.
