Does anyone have any expierence with a PTO on a rn 36 Hilux with a 18R engine ??

We want to install a mechanical winch ( ?? ) . Does anyone have any info about it?

yep,got no pics but my mates done it.

you want to use fj40 transfer case and a machined/milled ,tranz/tranny adapter ,helping centralise youre rear output to suit the hilux central member location, easy enough to do if you cant think outside the box,we used an air ram type actuators for engagement on the pto drive and winch drum.

i dont know about other people but i havent seen it done in nz before apart from bruce hughes winch truck.

I believe (never followed it up) that this drive unit will fit the G52 4- and 5-speed boxes found from around '84 in 60-series surfs and 65-series utes onwards that have the PTO cover.

This may or may not help you because you've probably got the older style 4-speed which I know very little about. However an engine/trans change for a 3Y/G52 might be another option to look at and use this output drive unit.

Just use any old winch.. grab one from a 60- or 70-series cruiser... although those ones weigh as much as a whole Hilux

Lots of trucks run PTO's, just find one that has the drive input on the right side and modify it to suit, should be pretty simple. I think Pajeros had them at one point... Reece? They would be nice and light.

Theres a Pajero PTO for sale on Trademe at the moment...

the trouble with using a pajero there 2 different styles .early and late .

both of these units are totaly different than toyota ,and the pajero units will simply not mesh up at all.

They are a nice light PTO winch, the problem is the cruiser and the aftermarket hilux PTO atatchments are on the passanger side and the input on the Paj winch is on the drivers this isn't the end of the world tho the worm gear on the input to the early winches can be remounted from the front with this done you can spin the winch 180 and it now drives from the passanger side... unfortunatly it isn't as simple as that... the frame for the winch is designed to push into the fairlead with a nice solid mount, by spinning it it now pulls at the top on 4 little M8 bolts with the snot you can pull with these little bastards I wouldn't put any money on those bolts doing the job!! so your gona have to build a mount out from the "new" front of it, to the fairlead not to hard as its cast steel and easy to weld and is so solid you'll never warp it
As for joining one to the toyota PTO no problems just get your last piece of winch drive shaft turned to fit the toyota universal simple as that!!

For the books I'll be doing this when I get time as I intend replacing my wankers gearbox with a 70 series cruiser one infact I'll be replacing alot of it with toyota bits
