Hilux/P76

Post by Smurf »

Anyone got any thoughts or comments on a p76 transplant for my 86 Surf, any comments from a Rover transplantee would be welcome, any hassles to look for etc.. Planning to Set up the 8 with a Borg Warner 35, hopefully mate the BW to the Hilux tranny. Truck has solid axle xonversion happening at the moment, 4.5 gears and 33 inch silverstones/7.50-16 SAT tyre options

You might want to give Bruce Hughes from Southland a call.
Bruce runs a P76 Hilux in the Winch Challenges and is a mechanic - I am sure he will be able to give you some quality guidance.

After all he won the most recent one.

From memory I think Bruce's runs an impco gas conversion and a manual hilux box - not 100% sure though.

On the tyre front you should start saving your pennies for some Simex Centipedes 35's should do the trick... Make the most of that shiny new 8 8)

While your there Bodge.......... The P76, does that bolt straight up to the ole 4 spd with no probs?? Ive heard all I need to do is put a 3.5 flywheel on.
Going to sit down this week - finally, and decide what to do with the 2 Rangies.. :?
On another note. Any ideas where I can replacement wheel nuts for the wheels same as yours. Im going to use the alloys for the road tyres but having been used on a fishing toy in its previous life the chrome nuts are no longer, plus 2 of them were missing.

cheers

Those wheel nuts are a mission - I looked every where cos a couple of mine were on the way out - no one could source them for me.... I must admit I gave up after a short burst of no sucess.

The P76 bolts straight up to the 4 speed but the sump is different so the bellhousing cover needs a bit of bodging. Mine came installed so i have never had to do it myself - my bellhousing cover was missing when i bought it and Tim [Brambledowns] bodged the gap for me. Not sure about the flywheel - can find out if you are desperate.... I am sure that mine is running the P76 fly as the starter gear is specific to the P76 Flywheel which is a coarser gear than the Rover version.

Up until recently mine had the original P76 starter - do yourself a favour and change this if yours is original - I have a good lead on gear reduction starters that are a bolt on replacement 2 minutes to change... and a MAJOR improvement.

Bruce is definitely still P76 at the moment - saw it a couple of weeks ago...

John Walker and Rolf Eng... were both running surfs with Lexus conversions and they are outstanding - given the price of the lexus and the huge HP advantage I would go Lexus any day - the Rover V8 is a almost a 50 year old design after all....

As for the 3.5 ... well at least the P76 has an extra litre to play with....

Auto all the way.
