I'm trying to find options for my diesel BJ73 Landcruiser with standard airbox, currently its a 3B but have a 13B-T that will be going in soonish plus a 3" steel snorkel.

Does anyone know a good supplier for a good re-usable aftermarket air filter like K&N, Fram, Unifilter etc?

Also has anyone got suggestions on which to go for?

Pioneer Auto Parts are the NZ agent for K & N filters. I would think that they will have a store in Wellie. They certainly flow good amounts of air (tested various size K & N's on a dyno).
They can also have a pre-cleaner element which wraps around the normal oiled cotton filter and which is easy to take off and shake out. I use this on one of my performance vintage cars that sees a lot of high speed dirt action.
must find the money to get one for my Prado .....! Oh for a full time job.

With these re-usable filters, like everything, you get what you pay for. A lot of them restrict flow rather than improving it. K & N's don't.
Some of them are not particularly good at fine filtration i.e. dust and dirt. Can't comment here on the K & N, as I have not compared the figures, but I believe they work well. They are used by a large number of race teams, CORR and off-road race included.
The important thing here is the type and quantity of filter oil used.

I got one of these of Rob (Naenae Tyres), washable filter...


the leading edges of the filter will need sealing but this is a 2 min job with a finger and some sealer, the pipe you can get from a place in the hutt road....(otherwise I may have a bit left)

I also run a "snorkel sock" at the top of the snorkel ....which Rob has as well

Thats quite cool Jerry, I have a use for that on another car! But for the cruiser I want to keep the big factory air 'box' to catch any water or wild life that goes into the snorkel so need something to fit that.

I did think about cutting a hole in the side of the air box and welding in a 3" steel tube then mount a K&N pod filter inside. But would be hard to make the lid seal since I wouldn't be able to use the centre bolt/wing nut because the pod filter would be in the way. If that makes any sense!

Roughly how much was your tube filter jobbie?

Supercheap will probably have a Unifilter for a 3B. Had one in my Safari and it paid itself off 5 times over.

Cool didn't realise Supercheap supplied Unifilter. I've only seen Fram there, will have to give them a call

Yeah neither did I until yesterday. I saw the oil and some smaller filters up on a wee shelf behind the counter. Failing that a 4wd specialist shop will either have them or know where to get them.

We've spoken about your starving filter before, but for your benefit and others, I will repeat myself and add a little more.

There is No Way that your engine will be able to flow anything like the airflow it needs through that black, I assume carbon fibre, air-box. If it had no filter in it, it may but probably not, and what's the point.
Think about the size of a typical filter on a V8, about 50 to 75mm high and about 350 to 400 outer diameter. (air flowing from outside filter through filter) That is a cylindrical surface area of between about 55000 and 95000 mm2
Your set-up looks like 130 high by about 75 inside diameter. (air flowing from inside filter through filter) A cylindrical surface area would thus be around 30500 mm2

Therefore your filter is about 30 to 50% of the size required going on a cylindrical surface area.

However the above does not include the depth or thickness of the filter.
In the case of a normal style V8 filter, about 50mm
and with your bling thing about 15mm
So V8 actual filtration area is between 2750000 & 4750000 mm2
bling thing filtration area 457500 mm2

So really your filter is between about 9 to 16 % of the filtration surface area that you require!

Jerry I would suggest yoy go buy a filter that will not reduce your torque HUGELY nor richen up the air/fuel ratio massively.

the speed shop in high st lower hutt can get unifilters in.
forget the name of the shop but near melling road.

get one like sadams in a K & N, they are washable, reusable, oilable etc etc etc

you will never need to replace it

got k&n's in my 70 and my 60 dam good filters and washable,buy it once and thats it

Speed shop, do you mean Road and Track? I'll give them a go, point of interest though - the owner is soon to be ex-owner. They change hands on August 1st.

I'm pretty keen on a K&N but would be good to find the best price since they are normalling pretty pricey.

Have used K&N's before and have been good but always had universal 'pod' type filters, I'm guessing something to fit a specific vehicle like the 70's will probably demand mega bucks, yeah?

Don't know about K&N but I paid $80 or $90 bucks for my unifliter. The replaceable ones were $40 so I didn't think that was to bad. + $12 for the oil. (This was 2 or 3 years ago so they may be a little more now)

road and tracks the one, k&n's are twice the price.

Bought a Unifilter for the new, 16 years ago, Patrol yesterday. $95.
