anybody removed the overload leafs on there hilux??
any problems doing so?
ive just purchased some extended shackles on trade me, will raise the back approx 40mm, which is sweet cause the back is a little lower than the front anyways, but im thinking to bring the back down a little bit so its not to much higher than the front i could remove the overload leaf which is about 12mm thick????
plus it should flex beter too shouldnt it????
i dont do any towing so dont need that extra support...

If you have lockers you will need to fit an anti tramp rod, otherwise you will bend your springs in front of diff. The over loads prevent this happening.

Remove it and do the anti-tramp bar too dude. Will save you having to fix/replace diff head after your first serious trip (been there done that)...

Go for a triangulated one with a swinging shackel at the front

Hilux's don't have a crossmember in the right place light Wopass.
Here is what I have done .
I had some steel folded to make a cross member from the centre bearing to the round tube under deck

You could do it wthout the coil but wouldn't be half as good
Cheers Richard

awesome, cheers for all a your input
would it be a critical thing to do now while i aint yet got lockers and shite horsepower?
or is it something that should just be done when the overloads get removed...
just thinking if it needs a cert would be pointless doing now untill i get the other few things that will need a cert done.. i only want to visit the cert man once

that was the mach 1 tramp bar, i killed the springs and driveshaft again after that so made Mach 2 which is still attached to the diff that DIXIE is going to one day use... trying to find pics of it, im sure they on here somewhere....

yip sweet, and by having it adjustable it means it doesnt matter if i was to change the height or spring setup too???
definately on the to-do list

Make a triangulated one like Wop's one in he photobucket album, it'll stop the twist and still allow the axle to articulate unrestricted

I actually disagree here.
You are trying to apply what works on a cruiser to a hilux which is totally different.
The big difference is that a cruiser has an off set diff so what Wopass has done is good because the anti tramp is in the middle of the diff.
The diff on a hilux is in the middle so therefore the rotation point can only be on top of the diff to make it work right so that both springs move up and down wihout stress.
Just look at a standard rangerover and see how that works
I have had mine like that for over ten years with no problem at all.
The drive shaft has a max movement in and out of 10mm and the angle of the pinion doesn't alter at all.
Cheers Richard

FFS
the principal richard, not the exact same thing.
there is a hundred different ways to do a tringulated tramp bar not just one.

been meaning to add to this, as im still not clear weather removing the overload leaf will give a noticeable difference in flex?????????? is it worth doing????????

Leave them in , you'll gain piss all buy removing them.Take the "Wraps" that hold the spring pack together off, Or loosen them in some way?.

If you remove the overloads you do gain flex at maximum articulations but the spring pack is more flexable.
Every hilux will axle bounce up hill, without the overloads this becomes a lot worse, if you remove some leaves you need to do something about this like Richard and Wopass.
Worth doing yes but only if done right. I have not done it but still considering it.

Old thread dig up.
Am i right in saying that a anti-tramp bar is the same thing as a traction bar to keep the diff head from rotating.
