Re: cruiser diff vs safari diff
dean you know how john showed us his 80 cv the other day? I think that was the bigger of the two, I never knew it but after reading a thread on here the other day it would seem there are 2 sizes of 80 cv's. I guess you also need to look into sixe of the diff head and clearance, would you prefer to go for the bigger stronger diff and loose some clearance (even though your running 38's) or go the smaller gear and have better clearance.
You haven't broken anything yet so why not just upgrade when you need to? Obviously you need to change ratios because of the 4.1's and big tyres. Im not a cruiser guy but is it right that you can go to a better ratio but using gears from a toyota dyna? could be a cheap option..

Re: cruiser diff vs safari diff
id say safari would be a shit load stronger uve seen how rory drives his and has only blowen hubs never a cv but they are a lot bigger in the head than a 80 diff but with 38s u can aford to lose a bit of diff clearance. a safari diff wouldnt be any difrent clearcnce wise to what uve got now.ether way you would probley need to coil it like mine or the leafsprings will endup on top of the diff head and itd be higher than it is now lol

Can anyone confirm this - I'd be interested to know what ratio the Dyna diffs are (have heard the same thing before but cant confirm)

Re: cruiser diff vs safari diff
i think rich's (muddyplummer) new truck has them, he got it from kiwimidi or something like that so one of those two might be of more help, or maybe we'll just pull one out of richs diffs out when he's not looking, im sure you could use his arbs as well dean
i cant remember wher i read about the dyna diffs so dont take my work from it, ill stick to my hilux diffs.

Right, so the Dyna diffs fit the 70 series and 80 series diffs? Think they were 5.29s?

Re: cruiser diff vs safari diff
apparently the dynas have a 6.37 ratio or something silly.

There is a bit of a debate on 80 vs gq front ends. 80's have a decent size cv but a weaker front diff head and gq's have much weaker cv's (not much larger than hilux) and much stroger diffs. Both are high pinion.
If you want the best of both worlds track down a GU front end. Massive cv's with a strong head.
Or you could go custom and use a nissan diff head and 80 outers. Is quite common is oz

Re: cruiser diff vs safari diff
It is a well known fact back in Oz and well documented in their 4wd magizines that nissans have stronger running gear then toyotas. Why do you think there is a run on at the moment of guys fitting nissan running gear under their trucks. saying that I have still managed to break a nissan CV.

Re: cruiser diff vs safari diff
Why not just put 30 spline longfileds in what you have? Then you have stringer cv's than either of your other options. Doesn't sort the diff head issue though. But having said that, I don't think it is a common thing to be blowing 9" cruiser diffs apart (70's are 9" aren't they?)
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

MNC, I owned and built most of that Midi ( ex KiwiMidi Now Muddyplumber) .. It has 5.29 Dyna Gears , ARB's and longfields.

its a width thing im also after, the diffs have been sweet but i dont really drive it with my foot up it alot, ive been quite cautious with it with the big rubber but i want to be able to feed it fat if i need it to without breaking things
ive noticed a huge drop in tippyness with the roof and rear doors gone so its getting there but just want to go a bit further and widen the front since ive got the back lined up

if you are planning on making the front wider than the back, I don't recommend it. Your road handling will be absolute shite if you do that.
keep same diffs front and rear, so either go for spacers on wot u got, or 80 diffs to make it wider, or nissan diffs to make it really wide

Thats in a different truck though Skid.
I agree, would love to have a diff set-up like that - big$$$$
Go the spacers to gain width as suggested - easiest by a county mile.

Re: cruiser diff vs safari diff
PS, and give me your 80 series rear end
That was a nice bit of kit. Was watching it on trademe but need to upgrade the wifes car first. Thinking of getting her a VX Cruiser
- Anyone let me know if you hear of a good deal out there.
I'd like a similar set up to that Midi with 80 series diffs under a FJ40 - Bens fault... putting stupid ideas in my head

Re: cruiser diff vs safari diff
They are 60' diff's,, Spring over in that Midi... And nothing wrong with Ben's ideas, you just need money and knowhow.

80 series cruiser is wider than GQ by a little bit

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
Re: cruiser diff vs safari diff
ohh the dyna has lower gears and will fit in the 80 rear end but not the front so you would have to get a gear set in from the states for the front or go for a 4.3 diff from a petrol dyna in the rear and a prado hi pin 4.3 for the front... no i havent researched it... ok maybe i have but just cant afford it

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
