terrano has stopped need some opinions

Hi have a 2.7 td terrano that has been running well for a couple of years ..... until last week that is. I was driving along and the car started to lose power and eventually it stopped. It would idle all be it roughly but when you pressed accelerator it would barely move the vehicle or it would die. My first thought was that it may be a clogged fuel filter.... I replaced the filter but it is still not running sa it should be. After replacing it on the side of the road Im hoping that it may be a air in the system problem ( realise that may be wishful thinking). I prefilled the filter before screwing it up to the housing and I have whilst it was idling cracked the injectors to bleed off any air that may have been trapped. Am I kidding myself or have I failed to bleed it correctly. Oh one moree thing the car will idle with new filter but it will stumble and run rough, but if I use the pump on top of the filter it idles faster slightly.
Any thoughts
cheers

What year is it? Just a thought could be the airflow meter, I have had a similar thing with the car.

Its a 1991model auto. never thought of airflow sensor must admit not to knowledgable about either.
As I said the car problem started with it being sluggish and not changing uo from 2nd to the higher gear then it was just progressively dying as I drove.

Mine is doing the same thing and I have changed the filter as well and also have an inline electric pump and it still dies. When it stopped the other day I undid the fuel cap and air sucked in so I left it loose and it still died!!!!

I think I have found the problem with mine. There is a breather line that runs all the way to the front of the car from the tank. It is the pipe with no hose attached to it that is on the centre right side of the firewall. Where this line comes out of the tank there is a small filter/non-return valve thing that I took off and smashed open don't know what it was for but I threw it away and put a larger hose on it and only ran it to the back of the car. Just went for a spin 140kph with a slight tail wind, seems OK don't you think?

Sounds like that line is fuel bypass, fuel that is supplied to your fuel pump, what is not required for injectors will bypass back to tank, sounds like you have solved problem of blocked filter by removing and smashing it. Suggest you replace it soon, on second thoughts it may be non return valve also, still replace. good roadside fix though.

Line is a breather as I said because when I put air in the supply line from the tank air comes out of the pipe on the firewall which is not connected to anything as I said.

I would suggest re connecting the breather pipe up unless you are sure the one you made is high enough and not inside the cabin area. You don't want water getting into nor the fumes inside the truck either.

When mine did the same thing it took me a while to find the prob.
Look under the power steering pump you will see a 17mm bolt undo it being careful there are 2 copper washers on the banjo fitting .
insert a ball point pen you should pull out a spring reinsert the pen you should pull out a very fine filter about as big as your little finger nail you will most like find this is bolcked up full of gunge give the usal clean up put back together n you will find a big difference in power etc.
Hope it helps you out.

check the inlet on the injector pump. i know on the td42 on the intlet inside the pump there is a very small filter. mine did this and it was just the filter blocked

we had a problem like this at work we let vehicle idel untill it was about to die then primed the knob on the top of the fuel filter and seen if it reved up, it was beleaved to be a air leak in the injector pump, how ever the problem went away if you kept the tank over half full, weird,
