Hi, I have an 86 double cab hilux and am based in christchurch. I am looking to hook up for outings around the canterbury region once I sort my gearbox out, which brings me to my question. Could any one tell me what model gear box's would fit into my truck or if anyone has one sitting round that they want to get rid of.
cheers Andy

hey dude, plenty of hilux guru's down there, but you may want to post a bit more info about the vehicle, like model code, engine etc. and the tag on the firewall has all the info on it you need if its all standard that is, should tell you what Gbox you should be after etc

If you have a 2L diesel or a 3Y petrol motor then you should have a G52 gearbox. A W56 will also fit but the transfer case lever is in a slightly different place.

ok, had a look at tag, it is a 2L engine and g52 gearbox. Any idea what year hilux/surf also have them in?

just to update, may have sussed a w56 gearbox over on the coast, so hopefully can go and get it and have it in within the next few weeks then I'll be keen to get out.
my hilux is pretty std, but I run 31 x 10.5 bfg muds , have full wrap around bull bar and snorkel. I have 4 rated towhooks on the truck as well as a few ropes and snatch. have a high lift jack and am looking intogetting the chains etc to use jack as a winch. I also have a
prs radio sitting there ready to go in once I get an aerial for it.
looking forward to meeting some new people and heading out.
cheers andy

try to get the metal plate and rubber boots that seals around the gear levers and screws to the tunnel, It is a slightly different shape to the one your truck will have with the G52 box. Makes sealing the tunnel back up a lot easier. from memory you need to move the hole in the tunnel back a bit which may leave you with a small hole to fill.
