interior light always on

Post by michaelmohr »

Hi, I've got a '93 2.7td Terrano. One problem is that the interior lighting is always on when switched to "door". I've checked the switches in the doors and they seem to be fine, switching on and off properly. Any ideas anybody why the light is not switching off when I close the doors? Could it be the relais? Is there a relais at all for this (2W)?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Had that happen with my 91 found out the catch on the door was loose the bit that holds the door closed :) tightened that up and no more problems

Na, I don't think that's it, because I unscrewed all 4 switches and manually switched them, no difference: light still on.

Sounds like a short in the loom, check for an earth through the switches when they are in the open position (and closed incase it is a faulty switch), then trace the wires.

If the switches work fine and switch on and off properly the doors cant be striking the switches properly when your closeing the doors

hey guys,

I've taken every switch off its wire effectively putting every switch in the closed door/switched-off position, one after the other and the light is still on, I'm certain the doors strikes the switch properly - so does that mean I've got a short somewhere else?

bit hard to trace the wires behind the lining i'd say. any suggestions where to start?

I've got the same problem, I pulled all the strikers and found that the front passenger striker does no break the earth so somewhere in the loom its earthed out. I need to take the seats and carpets out and trace the loom. I bought the truck like that, and did wonder why the previous owner had the door light switched to off. Best of luck.

Have you checked the back door switch? Mine did the same thing and it was the back door that was the problem. It is a very fiddly switch and if it is slightly out it won't turn the light off.

I was just thinking the same here too, the rear door switch is the only one you have not checked.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Kiwipete, this may sound VERY stupid, but where is the rear door switch? I was wondering about it already before and when I couldn't find one I figured it might not have one..... I've only got the one for the tire carrier, none else.

It is part of the latching assembly i the door, you have to remove the plastic liner to access it.
I have seen a write-up on NPORA the US website sometime in the past on it.

Thanks, Kiwipete, you're the best! Again!
I took the plastic liner off the rear door, shone my light in and found a single thin cable connected to the latch. Wasn't easy to get my hand in there but i managed to get it off. ....and IT WORKS!!! Ok, I took the easy way out just disconnecting it, but to get to the switch to reapir it, one would have to dismantle half the door. Not now.... maybe later. At least the light works properly with the front doors now. Cheers, mate!!!
