IZUZU BIGHORN PROBLEMS

ok guys another question for my mate with a IZUZU Bighorn.

He has a 1993 swb 3.1 Intercooled Turbo Diesel
Lately he has been experiencing a lack of power as if no fuel or something in all gears between 1500rpm and 2000rpm

He had the fuel filter and vacum hoses replaced and this didnt fix it.

He is getting a new breather system for the engine which apparently involves more efficient air flow and reduces pressure inside the engine from the turbo boost (apparently this will stop his rear main seal leaking)

At the same time he is getting the fuel pump replaced.

He has recently filled up with diesel from farm containers - could he just have a clogged fuel pump? Has anyone had the same problem and fixed it? Has anyone tried or know of any experiences were people have put this advanced breather kit on the engine?

He would appreciate any advice or comments before he takes it to the mechanic next week.

By the way ther problem started after towing a boat to hasst from wanaka if that provides any leads.

I would cross-post this on http://www.clubisuzu.com as there are some clever 'Suzu guys there... The first thing I would have suggested is to replace the fuel filter, but if thats done... hmmm... tried running an injector cleaner through it? Also, 2k-3k is the start of the turbo cutin range... could be something there... is the intercooler blocked up, butterfly jammed or something similar?

Just some thoughts...

Check the exhaust brake is not miss- behaving,
Check there isn't a banjo fitting with a blocked filter at the inj. pump like the TD42s

Bighorn Common problems!!

The most common problem with these engines are the EGR valves! Block them off and you'll probably find that it will fix it! Check out http://www.Clubisuzu.com to find some related articles where they'll describe what to do! Other common problems are also listed on the site, just have a good read! They're very helpful articles! But I would definitely block those EGR valves regardless! With the old diesel fuel at 500PPM of Sulphur the valves get blocked up really badly and now with the cleaner 50 PPM stuff a lot of vehicles suddenly are suffering from binding EGR valves! Had quite a few through at work already! They always have been a problem in the past but that was cause they were blocking up, now they're just seizing in place!!

I'd be careful doing that, I've been told by a couple of people not to put that stuff through diesel motors as it can stuff the injectors...

Do you mean the deep cleaning service thats been discussed on here before where they hook up a flushing machine to the truck for 1/2 an hour?... I'm just talking about throwing a bottle of wynns through a tank of diesel...

Yes thats what I'm talking about, depending on the injector model, it can stuff the valve bits...

Only if you run the stuff through your injectors in its pure form and at high revs will it do damage!!! In Europe where they smoketest diesels for WOFs(which I did whilst over there for 10 yrs) to obtain a clear smoketest sometimes we'd run a bottle of the stuff through pure but it has to be at idle only because the stuff is thinner than dieselfuel and at higher rpm the injector parts(needle and seat) will get impact damage! So mixed with the dieselfuel in your tank it's no problem unless your tank is empty of course when you put it in! You mix it with the tank at least half full!

well we found out what the problem was guys - two mechanics and $730 later !! My mate had a special breather kit installed for Izuzu motors which this second mechanic said would fix the problem - it didnt and he was driving the truck over the crown range to get a guiy to do a cash job on his fuel pump when the rear tyre blew out - this was actually his spare as he got a puncture a whil;e ago and never put the original tyre back on. As soon as he changed back to the original the problem was gone. The thing was he was using a smaller tyre for his spare so had been winding up pressure in his drive train!!!

So he paid $730 for the breather kit (which does increase peformance a bit he reckons) but he never needed to spend any money at all so heres a cheap lesson for everyone

$730 for the breather kit  Thought they were only 1/2 that price

No, thats about what they cost... I have a few here on special for $700 if anyone wants one  Here comes my retirement fund :P

Surely it would only show up in 4WD? On road performance in 2WD should not be affected by that at all unless maybe he had a really tight LSD... but even then probably not.
