A mates Safari revs a lot quicker than mine. The throttle seems a lot more responsive.
I was just curious, I think mine has done a lot more k's than his.
His one also blows black smoke, whereas mine does not blow any smoke at all.
I would also like to try and reset the tappet clearance, and believe the hot clearance is 14thou - but have read that setting them to 12thou will be a little quieter.
What could the possible reasons of the lesser throttle response/slower revving?
Are there any recommendations of what injector cleaner to use? I am thinking new air/fuel filter, and would like to clean the injectors at the same time.
Also, when braking my steering wheel 'wobbles' left to right. Google suggests warped brake rotor(s), truck also gets a little 'bump steer' . I just had an alignment done, it was toeing in, but hasnt fixed the wobble. Are there any bushes in the front which should be replaced, which could cause this?

Mine used to get the wobbles under braking when it had worn panhard bushes, and radius arm bushes. Both were replaced at the same time, so not sure which (if not both) were the cause

Did you replace them? or have them done?
I am thinking it best to replace all the bushes I can get my hands on, seeing as its done a fair few miles.

Hi, If your mate's is faster and also smokes more than your's it sounds like it might have the Injector pump turned up a bit high.
And yeah check your panhard rod bushes and also basics like are the wheels ballanced correctly as this can also cause the shimmy under brakes or hitting bumps etc, This worked for me as ive had 3 Safari's with a shimmy at some point and 1 of them was panhard rod bushes and the other 2 were wheel/tyre related with 1 being badly ballenced and the other had shite snow tyres fitted which caused the Shimmy.

hi there, i also had that problem and found that the king pin bearing where worn out. lift the wheels off the ground and see if the wheels move by tilting top-bottem?

You can just take a shim or two out and they will tighten back up.

hmm ok, im not quite sure where that is yet - but ill get in there and take a look. I noticed today that something is making a clanging kinda noise from the front right wheel too...so something is def loose.

With that last post I would be pulling the whole front axle apart, check it over, service and replace, put back together=peace of mind. The shims are accessed from the top or bottom of the hub. You will see x4 14mm bolts, take them out and shims are there. You can also fill your hub full of grease by removing one of these bolts and filling with grease, takes about 1.5 tubes per hub.

what sort of grease would you fill in their?? that special CV grease??

I can't figure why you fill the whole knuckle with grease?It won't lube the CV any better but would make for a lot more work when repacking the cv with grease.

I just use normal old grease like for wheel bearings etc. I fill it to keep the water out, it works. I know it doesn't lube the CV!How would it make more work for packing the CV? You just wipe the grease out.

Fair enough about the water but if your wiper seals and balls are in good condition it isn't a problem. The last 2 axle rebuilds I've done I sanded down the balls and repainted the whole diff. Getting a nice new surface makes huge difference to the wiper seals and they last much better.
I've never had water inside the knuckle but then we don't do the deep water thing anywhere near as much as you guys down south. Ours is more about mud which isn't as much of an issue.

Get an energetic mate to help you by pushing the whole front of the vehicle sideways, back and forward. Find the natural frequency it will move back and forth and apply energy. Then while your mate does that, jump underneath and check all the bushes, king pins, bearing surfaces for movement by putting your finger between the 2 opposing surfaces. You will immediately feel any slack and identify what needs fixing. If you pinch your finger (could require cold brown stuff to fix) then you should fix it sooner rather than later.

pulled a shim out, and it didnt make any difference.
The bearing looked in good condition, lots of good looking grease etc.
Next step I guess is to get the brakes machined...
