Offroad-Express

Anyone driven into Awaroa? We are renting a bach there next year, and with the boys gear, want to drive in. Just need a bit of locals knowledge about the inlet crossing. The owners of Awaroa Lodge who are one of my customers said I can drive in, but they haven't (as they are loaded) so aren't sure whereabouts I should cross.

The owner of the bach thinks I should just get the water taxi...

Hi Bill, I can't answer your question as I have never driven across, how ever having camped at Totaranui for over 25yrs and having spent many hours exploring Awaroa Inlet by boat and on foot I wouldn't take my vehicle across. The last wheeled vehicle I saw crossing was a quad bike, there is a river that flows into the top of the inlet and this leaves a very soft bottom, If you did try driving across and got stuck you would lose you Cruiser, If the Locals don't drive across I would take notice of them. The other thing to consider is , It is a National Park and are vehicles aloud. Talk to the DOC office at Takaka.

Hi Bill, It might pay to do some research on water taxis as most of them are set up for tourists and not freight. Check with the batch owner or lodge, the other thing to check is a safe storage for your vehicle while your away. Awaroa is tidal and if you where to arrive on the low tide you will have to unload on the front beach where visitors get off for the lodge, as you know the owners of the lodge you might get them to cart all your gear to the batch with their quad and trailer and you will need a lot of gear/food etc; as there is no shop there. Does the batch have a generator ? or is it LPG, It is a beautiful place but very isolated. Give me a call, 3387202.
