E CAT safes n new gun laws

Post by petefj40 »

I had to get myself an E cat safe last week cause i just couldn't part with a couple of my rifles.
I think it's a bit tough to have to up grade your safe for a thumb through/pistol gripped weapon. But I wanna stay on the right side of the law so i just did it.

Welcome to your National Shooters Association (NSA). The NSA website is the central internet focal point for firearms related information in New Zealand. NSA is primarily focussed on the preservation and development of recreational shooting sports and lawful administration of arms control legislation.

Police campaign to restrict non-conventional stock designs

The police department is currently running an advertising campaign and threatening law abiding and responsible firearms licence holders with prosecution if they don’t comply with their demands.

National Shooters Association advises all licence holders who have possession of one or more of the effected firearms that they are not obliged to follow the instructions of the police department at this time.

The ‘Save our Butts’ legal challenge has obtained a judgment from the High Court at Palmerston North. In that judgment, Mackenzie J confirmed that the police department have no authority over the classification of firearms and he confirmed that the police department opinion of the legislation has no legal standing.

Police have publicly advised that the firearms which they presently find offensive are in a configuration that suits the New Zealand definition of sporting configuration. Under New Zealand law semi-automatics that are maintained at all times in a sporting configuration are not MSSA and do not require special endorsements. The police department have confirmed through Crown Law that they are not reclassifying these firearms.

National Shooters Association advises members and licence holders to not apply for special endorsements or obtain permits for their sporting configuration semi-automatic firearms until further notice.

Sharpened though? My stepdads into his samari swords. Got a 'reject' that has a crack in it from his mate who it one of under ten people who is in contact with the true artists who make actual samauri swords. Uses it on the hedge and medium sized trees and it is absolutely lethal. The craftsmen are considered living pieces of art in Japan as it takes around 6 months of folding to make one blade and you need premium steel to begin with, then all the knowledge that is only passed down verbally. Amazing stuff.

Anyway, gun safes are never something you can be lacking on. If you can store you rifle and you bolt in a different building then that's even better. Pretty sure I've heavily voiced my opinion about guns on here before but its a privileged, not right and the more protection there is from some #### stealing your gun and shooting me with it or vice versa the better. :D

It is privilege to own a firearm. I would like to think all responsible gun owners think this way......

My point in starting this thread is.

The thumb through/pistol grip weapons I own can kill just as any firearm can. But they are only .22 cals. While the bigger caliber weapons I own get stored in the weaker A Cat safe because they don't have any thumb through/pistol gripped stocks on them.

Go figure.

from the fuzz site
* An obvious pistol grip below the trigger guard that allows a full hand pistol grip irrespective that the pistol grip may be connected to the stock – this includes the HK USC .45, SL8-4 and Dragunov style stock
* Any addition that connects the pistol grip to the stock or butt in an attempt to make it no longer free standing (such as adding a metal or plastic rod).
* A second grip forward of the trigger.

How is a thumbhole considered a pistol grip? from their description to me Image this is still an A-cat as you can't fit your full hand on the grip and it's not a rod to stop it from being free standing, yet they say it's an E-Cat.
Yet a rifle grip like this isn't Image.
How does a different shaped stock make a rifle more dangerous?

When a thumb through stock is on a semi auto firearm it has to be stored in a E Cat gun safe.
Well, that's my understanding anyway. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

again this law is only going to restrict the law abiding people and not the ones that really cause the problems (IMO)

Just look at the recent shootings :(

mhm,im of the opinion (and i dont have a license yet) that the hole law system is way out of kilta and what has just been said above proves that, just becos of the pistol grip it needs a e cat safe yet more powerful rifles just get a standard safe, its rediculous, like the huge air powered rifles which are more powerful then some small rifles yet you dont need a license or safe, just 18 and cash and its yours, thats crazy,im going to get my license soon and ive already told my wife the safe will be more expensive by far cos im getting a e cat for everything,im an enginner by trade and i keep $40 hammers in a box thats more secqure(spelling) than that which would pass as a safe for standard rifles,i see it as just asking for trouble really, the law defines it must stop oportunist thiefs geting them, once they kno youve got a safe they come back prepared, but to police thats ok,whats with criminals getting guns being ok?i just dont understand it

from my understanding most guns used in crime ... are not stolen
and most inportantly .. with all things
locks only stop honest people
its takes a fairly substantial lock to stop someone that actually wants your stuff

there ant much these days that will stop a cordless grinder and a 1mm cut off wheel

You're dead right.
But with that in mind. You still wouldn't leave a firearm sitting around, even though thieves can get your stuff no matter how well it's secured.

For many years now, I have used a Ruger .44 Rem Mag Semi Auto as my preferred Sika gun.

no thumb hole.

IF I was to get an after-market stock from the States that is a thumbhole stock, is it now E-cat?

Apparently yes.

WHO makes this judgement? Some 20 year old cop with no real firearms experience? Again, Apparently, Yes.

vvega raised an interesting point, WHERE do the cops get off saying that its POLICE POLICY to do all this stuf? WHERE do they get the power to state and formulate POLICY???

That's the purview of the GOVERNMENT, NOT the cops, their job is to ENFORCE Govt policy. NOT create it.
So somehow, we MUST resist these guys who take too much on them selves.

It is stated POLICY by the police to slowly remove all privately owned firearms from our ownership. Policy?

Am I advocating insurrection and resistance to the gummint? you betcha boots I am.

If we ever have total disarmament, do they really think that the ungodly will meekly hand over their guns? Get real!!! Only the law-abiding will do this, and the ungodly will keep theirs. Then we are at total subjection the bad bastards.

Look at England!! More gun based crime there that you could shake a stick at, and they have had private gun ownership rteduced to only the wealthy landowners for years.
