torque converter alignment ?

Post by Rotazuk »

I know stuff all about auto's ( that can be liberally expanded to anything else in the world too :) )

Anyway when we do an engine conversion and an adapter plate is used , if it was a manual the clutch plate now engages less on the gearbox output by the thickness of the adapter plate . Likewise the spigot bearing must be also out by the same amount . This all works just fine .

What about an auto , can the torque converter handle being 8 or so mm out from where it sits ? How critical is its location ? Does the converter need to be spaced out to match the adapter plate ?

Thinking of reverse adapting a 1.6 4sp auto onto a 1.3 engine as they only had a 3sp auto .

Cheers

there are a couple of seals that run on the input shaft to the auto gear box, make sure these are still engaged, but if spacing out then 10mm nuts on a 8mm bolts give about 8 mm spacing, better yet, spin them up on a lathe to correct length
