TJ auto 1st Low tooooo fast
TJ auto 1st Low tooooo fast
Hi all
I have just bought myself a Late 1996/early 97 TJ, yes it says 1996 on the sticker
I'm just about to kit it out with 2 inch Lift with EFS Shocks. I notice that 1st low is very fast and frankly scary so if I put Simex 31/9.5/15 under her I should think I will be skating down muddy tracks
Any wise words of wisdom ? as I am used to fabulous 1st low of my MU and Mits JTop

Re: TJ auto 1st Low tooooo fast
Three options really:
1) 4L and 1st when going hills
2) Left foot braking (and over-riding that with accelerator)
3) Re-gear diff ratios.
Its actually the diff ratios (probably 3.07) that is the problem not the gear box. So far I have been living with a combination of 1 and 2. Number 3 is an expensive but more permanent/proper solution.

Re: TJ auto 1st Low tooooo fast
Thanks for that
Thought as much. I assumed that the low would be as good as a 1994 cherokee I once owned, that had a great low range

I don't know much about Cherokees, but all NP 231s are 2.72:1 low gear ratio. I have a feeling Cherokees had NP 242, which would also have the same low ratio.
But then you might have different transmission and diff ratios giving a different overall crawl ratio. It gets a bit complicated sometimes when you are comparing two different vehicles (unless they have the same engine, gears and everything, including tyre sizes).

Yes I remember now
So will a Cherokee trans retrofit to a Wrangler by chance ?
Forever hopeful

It can be done (many write ups on the net) with a few things. You will need TCM (transmission control module) from the Cherokee. You will also need to play with the front and rear driveshafts (transmission lengths are different). Which also means playing with the transmission skid and the mount. So yes its doable, but you must want it that badly.

Re: TJ auto 1st Low tooooo fast
OK, I will make that stage 3
Just put 31x10.5x15 Silverstone Xtreme tires on and took it for a blat. Must say that I would have expected the 4.0l donkey to do better. And, wow does the fuel gauge actually move and fast I might add
So on the net to find a way of raining her back and getting more bang for buck.
