New springs on LWB Patrol

Post by piebuss »

Hi all
First time posting on this site but I've been enjoying reading the forums for a while now.....
I've got a 1995 Patrol which I use for highway driving the majority of the time but off road more and more frequently.
I've bought some springs which are going in this weekend to give it a 50mm lift.
I was just wondering if I need to buy shock absorbers imediatly or if I can wait till next pay cheque to get some. i.e. will 50mm lift be too much for the standard shocks or will they be fine untill I can afford some new ones?
I could buy some Gabriel shocks for cheap but from what I've read on this site they are not the best option, and I don't want to go cheap.....

welcome to ORE!!

you will probabaly find teh std shocks will top-out with the extra lift, so replacing them as soon as you can will be ideal. go for OME shocks in the back :D

i had some monroe gas shocks when i first put my lift in that must have replaced the factory ones at some stage in the safari's life, then got some old man emu ones and they were 20mm longer so not a hell of a lot gained.

do you have the sway bar disconnect in your nissan??

You'll be able to stick your old shocks back in as a tempory measure but they probably wont have enough travel and they'll end up ripping themselves apart under articulation.

Like badnuz said stick some OME (Old Man Emu) $$$ shocks in it, they are a good quality heavy duty shock and will cope with your heavy truck.... you can buy cheap shocks but they are usually too light and dont last the distance and it defeats the purpose

Old man Emu shocks....
Ok cheers for that guys.
Don't know if any of you are parts gurus or not but I've picked up a set of springs CNFH-246 and the rear CNRH.
I looked up on www.springs.co.nz and they specify these ones to raise the 3L Patrol. Will they still raise my TD42??? or is it too heavy?
They are big heavy things.....

Dunno mate but people like Darinz and all the winch challenge boys know all the safari suspension pretty well (they usually quote all the part numbers off the top of their heads   ) and can give good sound advice

Put the new springs in this avo.
It's suprisingly basic when you get into it..... The whole rear end just drops off when you disconnect the sway bar and shock abzorber...
The front looks great, with at least 50mm lift, the rear looks a little higher than standard but I'm not completly happy with the height gained in the rear..... I'm considering a pair of small spring spacers as a cheap option. Anyone got any horror stories I should know before doing this?
I reckon the Old Man Emu shocks next and I'll be happy.. Anybody know where to get these from? I asked when I picked up the springs from BNT but they don't stock them....

Live up in Auckland.
What’s a decent price for a set of these???
Just had a look at my finances this month and looks like it’s a bill paying month 

ARB supply them so break out the cheque book. I have run OME in two trucks and found them shit, shocks lost their dampner ability and the springs sagged real quickly, but it's just my opinion. Currently running TJM shocks and springs. Like them in the rear but make the front dance like a pony. Looking at doing the 80sersis shock conversion and some different springs to get rid of this problem.

Recently fitted 60mm lifted cobra springs, and Raw Nitro shocks to my lwb.Have not done alot of off road yet but on road handling has improved. Got them of bloke on tm in christchurch can give direct contact if required for better deal or try searching Advantage 4x4. Was $550 for 4 shocks plus freight but he did good deal on this as I bought entire kit including castor bushes, longer brake lines and steering damper.
Apparantly similar construction to ome but cheaper.Only prob now is need to up to 33 tyres as looks like a roller skate and modify towbar so all my toys I tow arent dragging their ass.

Noticed now when I go over a speed bump there is a nasty noise which comes from the suspension.
When we removed the shock absorber the axile was held up by the sway bar. Do you guys think that the noise is the sway bar maxing out or could it be because I've still got standard shocks???
