Just bought a LN65

Hi Guys,
Will be picking up a LN65 Hilux double cab with 2.4 diesel minus tray, with a cracked head on Thursday. New to 4WD and just looking for a bit of advice.
Just looking to build something to have a bit of fun in at the moment and see if 4WD'ing is for me. Have had a bit of a read through the forums and am thinking about pulling the old diesel and replacing with a 7MGTE. As far as I can tell the 7M should bolt in with the standard mounts I got and need to change to the 5M manual bellhousing, is this correct?
Also wondering what clutch etc I need? And anything else I need to look out for?
The truck is deregistered but considering get it road legal again, any idea what the cost will be for cert and reregistering? Any help appreciated.
Oh and I'm in Auckland
Cheers
Brad

hey mate, sounds like a bit of fun ahead, havent done a 7m conversion but i think that all sounds right from what ive heard, incase you hadnt thought of it oyul need a brake booster as petrol / diesel are different
regarding cert and reroading it,very much a no go from all experiences ive heard of,to get road worthy they will literally strip the car bare and check absolutly everything, all rust must be repaired, usually every replaceable mechanical component will be required to be replaced and a whole lot of other red tape unfortunatly,so pretty much leaves you with a offroad vechile only thatll need to be towed everywhere
sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Ask hosehustler on here about reroading it. When he had a 60 surf he rolled it and had to swap the body over. Am pretty sure he got it re-vinned and it had a supra in it.
For re-vin all steering and braking components have to be like new, you'd be looking at about a grand just for the inspections (cert and vin).
Not all doom and gloom

Not the end of the world if it's a tower, got the work wagon with free gas ;P and could always pick up another registered wagon later to swap over.
Pretty keen to go with a M series motor just for the ease of install, but are there any other reasonably cheap conversions?
Also whats a good starting point for suspension mods?
Cheers

sorry if my comment came accross to strong, anything can be done, its all just money but as youve just said you might do,alot of people just get a wrecked but still regod vechile and do swaps, plus free work gas, nice
mhm another common bang for ya buck is commy v6 but litle bit more work needed there, not as easy as m series
and mods, where to start, the first thing id say is to sit down and consider how much money you plan on spending and where you want the truck to go,then work out where to distribute it on th truck, sus mods arnt the be all and end all, also take into consideration traction aids, lsd's, lockers and the likes
but most guys start with a 2"sus lift and 2" body lift which normally sees them run 33s resonable well
more than that some guys go coons in the back, rears up front, high steer etc $$$ goin up up up

When I did the body swap on my old Surf I had to get a VIN plate re-issue but the vehicle wasn't de-registered and still warranted which means there was no inspection process, it was just a matter of applying for the VIN plate through VINZ and supplying them the original details of both vehicles, they also had to come and physically sight both vehicles. The process took two months and only cost $30.
To re-register the $1000.00 mark stated is right, when a friend did his, and as stated by others its a very nit picking process of inspection

Well had a think and gonna keep it as a trailer sailor. Still liking the idea of a 7M, but also looking at the commy V6 option. Just wondering, the adapters, are they a straight bolt up or is there a lil more too them and what do they cost?
Got a mate with a spare 4 bolt mains 350 chev, but that would be a whole lot more money, than I want to put into it at this stage

Cheers

7m are way tough, the problem was the heads wernt torqued down enough in the factory and in the rebuilding specs, trick is to replace all the head bolts with arp bolts and do them a little bit tighter, I know a guy who just got rid of his 1G as it kept on throwing conrods, he ravs about the commy 6 he just put in

Have a look at the 1jz and 2jz toyota engines. they are heaps lighter than a 1uz and develop nearly as much power. They are also alot newer, more powerful, more reliable and easier to get parts for then the 1G, 7m etc
I used to have a ln65 lux with a 1jz-ge (2.5l straight six) and im not kidding but it was quicker than a surf i drove with a 1uz in it and another 1uz powered lux ute i went in.
Personally i think 1uzs are a little bit overrated (only a personal opinion tho)
Now ive got a ln130 surf with a 1jz-gte (2.5l twinturbo soarer engine) with steel wheeled turbos etc, fuel system upgraded, and higher boost and ive dragged evos, rotors etc off at the lights before lol
I've got photos of under the bonnet of both if your interested.
Also i dont think ya g52 box would be up to it, a r150 is the best option.
I'm converting my surf back to manual so will be selling the auto box in it soon which has been upgraded to supra auto internals
Cheers, Dan

I'm keen for pics of your 1J setup.
I've been dreaming of a 2JZ for ages, imagine this noise but with mud flying:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFQyOWE3ONEAlso any information you have about connecting JZ to R boxes, I know they came factory like that in the original cars just a matter of finding the bellhousing.

uz is substantilally lighter than 1/2jz ,, ... its not that much heavier than a 4age

270kg for the 2j
190 for a 1uz
and yes they are overated .. but thats because everyone expects 700hp
i make 150 odd rwkw .... about the same as a stock 1jzgte ..without the turbo's :d
next time your in ... ill take you for a burn in our turbo 1uz surf ... it really is quite stupid
as for gearbox ...g52 will die .. i killed hilux diffs and my g52 in mine
