Hi, just joined up and hoping for a bit of info.
I have just moved to Nelson, and am looking for 4wd tracks around the area. Last week I attempted the Maungatapu saddle track, which was great until I reached the point of no return halfway up, bit of a wash out. Can anybody help me out with other tracks?
Cheers

You are best to join the Nelson 4x4 club because alot of the tracks are in the forestry and are only permitted to clubs that have a contract
The Nelson club runs a trip every two weeks . A big variety from winch challenges down to Grade 1 family outings
Cheers Richard

Andrew,
As bulletproof has mentioned you are better of joining the local club. Access is hard enough for us to get without tracks being used by people without access being granted by the respected landowners/leaseholders. We always welcome new members but please respect access to some tracks as it can be ruined for clubs by one foolish act whether intentional or not.
You can also have a play around Sharlands Creek area when access is open. Be careful with some side tracks if going on your own.

I thought Sharlands Creek requires a permit as its forestry

Hey Kevin,
Thought only part of Sharlands needed a permit when you go left to get access into Hira. Was told when the gate is open and they are not logging it was free access to the right at the bottom. Motorcycles are in there all weekend and have been in there before with no problems. Hope im not wrong.

Just read about a person killed in a 4wd accident on Thompsons Track in North Island. This is the sort of thing that can happen so quickly due to inexperience, not being prepared and travelling on tracks ALONE without any offroad driving knowledge. These sort of accidents should inforce the fact that anyone new to 4wd should atleast be involved in a local club to get some basic experience about operating a 4wd vehicle.
