A 3LT would be a big step up from a 2LT, a 5LT would be even better (5L is 3 litre)
None of them will be as powerful as the almost limitless possibilites of a petrol engine but ease of modification wise keeping it L series will be the better option.
I have a Blizzard with a 2LT so my options are kinda limited and a 5L would bolt straight in and I can keep my original gearbox, PTO etc without huge modifications.
Hiluxes have a bit more aftermarket theres heaps of parts available for petrol conversions.

The 5L is non turbo but all your turbo gear will swap over with a few little mods
Usually they all bolt across with some exceptions.
Search these forums and the rest of the net, there's plenty of 4 information about swapping L motors.

5l's are gutless as and to get one good enough to turbo is gonna cost ya big bucks maybe $5k+ if you want to stay diesel you may need to look at putting in a 1kz 3lt turbo out of a surf or prado but then you have to change to a efi system.
Sadly bang for buck and ease of install the supra is the best option in my opinion
I would suggest you have a look at the costs involved in all cases as it may no be as simple as it sounds to swap the turbo gear over to a 5l ie injector pump capacity, exhaust manifolds etc etc

you said you have access to a cheap 3l put that in fits same mounts as your 2l ,fit ct20 turbo of 2l to this piece of piss as you have all the bits just need to weld in oil return to sump and change oil coiler/filter housing from other motor.Minor cam grind im aware of profile that works great .Crank up the diesel pump as it is a mechanical pump .Its not gonna be a total power house but about 150% more than you got now and you wont need cert as most places cant tell the difference to look at.
Easy as aye

If its going to be an every day driver with some mods id keep it diesel, i had a 2jz supra motor in my old truck it was great with the power, but it liked to check out all the fuel stations along the way to go any where. Ive got a 1kz surf now, got rid of the efi fuel pump, (one wire to keep in running) and got a manual fuel pump (2lt body with different guts) which you can wind up the fuel and up the boost. Went for a ride in a prado with a modded fuel pump running 37s ect and it would dick my 2jz 50k onwards and it was a whole lot more econmical

yep all the gear from the 2lte will bolt straight on2 the 3l, you have to move a few studs on the manifold but the holes are there so just a mater of moving em, a couple guys in our club have got there 3ls screaming, running 20psi boost with internal work using the turbo off the 2.4
