60 series axles under bj40

Post by garic »

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if someone could go over what im looking at for this conversion. I know you have to extend the mounts for the shackles due to the width. The main thing im wondering is the steering and the brake booster, what would need to be modified with the steering??? also if its a bit is it a good idea to do power steering at the same time if modification is needed any way?? also would my current break booster be sufficient with the front disc brakes ?? just new hoses.

Plus is it a mission to adapt the stupid axle hand break to the rear drum brakes of the 60 series?

And what is a good/bad price for full axles with diffs and brakes etc

My truck is a 1981 bj40 (all round drums with crossmember under bellhousing type)

Thanks in advance guys

Have a search through wopass's old threads he documented a 60 series axle conversion with lots of pic's on his 40 series thread a few years back although his was a SOA conversion.

You have to shift or make new spring perches for the axle housing and I think the diff pumpkin starts to get in the way of the spring perch on the drivers side coz 40 and 60's have the same length short axle so with a wider housing the pumpkin ends up a bit closer to the drivers side

I wouldn't do it if I were you. This is where it all starts and in 5 years when you still haven't finished the mod's you'll think back and say "Man I wish I had just driven that cruiser"

Heaps of pic's and discussion on this mod on ORE - just need to use the search function...

garic, you must be mates with sam..

with the 60's diffs, ya either have to move the chassis mount to the outer edges more to fit on the std diff perches, or inboard the perches on the diff and leave the std chassis mounts. if ya do move the diff perches in you'll have to be aware of leaving the diff nugget excessable. also if ya gonna spring it over or leave it sprung under.

then with the handbrake, ya should be able to leave everything there and just acquire the cable to the rear shoes.....? my 40 was like that originally..

the standard booster should be sweet, but most upgrade the booster anyways... just stay stock and see how she pull's up..

Hey yip sure am mates with sam, how did u know ??? ha ha

All points taken aboard and ill let you know how it turns out.

I have tried searching in this forum but I must not be searching the right things as I never get the info I want???? Have done a lot of searching on Ih8mud which was quite usefull but there is definitly mixed opinions about it. Seems like the guys who have done it successfully think its good. It kinda is a solve multiple things in one big go for me (as in front disc brakes and hand brake) as my current hand break doesnt work and drum breaks are drum breaks.

One last thing, whats the deal with certing this kinda modification????

Just got myself a whole bj60 for a parts car that has power steering disc brakes etc so sounds like ill be pulling the whole diffs and putting them under with the power steering.

Ill be looking at putting the whole axles under with power steering, the B engine in it also has an aftermarket turbo and I want to put a soft top and change the seating arrangement around and then cert time.

What other bits should I strip from it? will prob take the gear box, its 4 speed and it has a 3b engine but is siezed. Anything else of value on these trucks?

Thanks

take anything you can bud...

leaf springs may be of use, and leaf spring mounts, brake booster, clutch cylinder, driveshafts, someone may want a fuel tank, glass, doors etc.. the whole thing can be parted out..
