Hi everyone,

just gettting into 4x4'n.
trying to deside between a landcruiser and a patrol late 80's-mid 90's on both. desided to go manuel desiel. but which to choose?

any advice to the pro's and con's of each would be appreceated.

Currently not with a 4x4 club but with prob either go with Manukau 4x4 or auckland 4x4.

Welcome aboard.

Whats your budget? LWB or SWB? What do you want to do with it (ie towing etc etc)?

ideally SWB. use would be daily driver. 4x4'n and the occasional towing. budget is yet to be determained.

For SWB, I have always preferred the Safari's. Some love em, some hate em.
They are heavy, but bullet proof, wide, but stable, slowish (non turbo) but can get excess of 400k on the motor if looked after.

I've owned 5 SWB Safari's now, and have aleays found them reliable

I'm thinking that. really like the look of the SWB Y60 compaired to the cruiser or even anyother nissan.

anything i need to look out for in hunting one down?
i.e. problem areas with rust?

also 4.2 or 2.8
whats an easier platform to turbo?
reliability?

Go for a 4.2, if you can afford it, go turbo, otherwise it's easy enough to get an aftermarket turbo fitted.
Can't remember all the details on years etc, but rust in rear sliding windows is common on pre 92 models, panhard rod front mount was weaker on early models, and could crack, cracks around front seat mounts, and also around seam in front footwell.
Wheel shimmy can be a problem, and can be caused by a few things such as kingpin bearings, panhard/radius arm bushings.
Few other I can't think of right now

Best to test drive and do the normal pre purchase checks
