This is the blazing headlines in Tasmanian newspapers today.
Story--
18yo killed when the tow ball was didlodged from the tow tongue and flew through the back window and killed the guy who was a passenger.
WHY
Because they were being snatched out using the tow rig.
This was not a `freak accident` it was breaking the 1st rule of recovery--USE the recovery points or hooks not the tow rig.

surely if you remove the towball from the tounge and enter a shackle through the hole it is strong enough. I suppose it depends on the thickness of steel.

even without removing the ball you can use the eye of the strop to make a figure of 8 and wrap it around the tounge so the load is taken by the tounge and not the tow ball

does this work? im trying to figure out where to mount a tow hitch on the back but this would be very simple? Dont want this happening to someone pulling me out

pretty cheap to have a professional mount a hook to another tounge that you can bolt on and off depending if you are towing a trailer or 4wheeling. At the same time you can get the pro's to check how your tow bar is mounted and how strong it is, nothing worse than ripping the full bar or even rear crossmember out of your truck.
I used the shackel through the hole method for a while on an old surf but ended up bending the tounge at about a 45 degree angle from being in a hole and the tower being on higher ground. Then it was no good for putting a ball back in and towing with anyway There are upsides to having them completley seperate.

if i remember rightly the ball didn't break, the tow tongue was broken previously and welded back up. the weld broke and tongue and ball went flying.
