R50 Diff breathers

Post by thorpy »

Hi guys
Just after a bit of advice from those in the know.
Today I jacked up my terrano ( 97' R50 ) looking to fit some extensions to the diff breathers.
When I found where the breather was it appears to have a hose fitted to it from factory which disappears up into the body.

So can anyone tell me if this is factory or am I looking at the wrong thing??

Cheers

Cheers for the reply Krawlr

Iv traced the rear one and it goes up and sits above the chassis rail above the spare wheel , but its just an open end on the hose.
Is this ok or should I add a filter and is it high enuf or do I need to extend it??

Tomorow nights mission , find the front one.
Also do I need to look for breathers on the trans?? and transfer case??

Thanks

Hi Thorpy, I have the 95 series and the rear breather was as you described. I removed this and aquired a length of suitable hose and placed it through one of the rubber bungs under the rear seats, siliconed to prevent water penetration. This hose extends up into the rear door pillar as high as I could get it.

Dont forget to leave enough slack in the section between the dif and floorpan to allow for suspension travel.

The front dif is attached to a network of steel pipes that include the fuel tank breather and ends up at the top centre of the firewall. You should be able to see a pipe with a u bend in it, like a walkingstick. I have thought of extending this one too, but have not gotten around it.

I dont know about your headlights, but mine let water in, so breathers were attached to them as well, used fishtank silicone hoseing here and took it to the same place as the front dif breather. No more water and no more condensation either.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Sorry, i cant recall locating the tranny breathers, but i suspect they will be part of the system for the front dif etc.
Will look at mine again when i return home in the weekend.

Be interested to hear what you decide on for the under-belly protector system as i need to do the same myself.
