Hi there all,

After having my zuk for a couple of years the time has come to do some more serious work. after 275000 km on it the diff is whining, gearbox whines, engine mounts gone all soft and engine in need of a rebuild.

i was wondering if anyone has any info on doing the turbo conversion on the motor. it is the 8 valve carb motor, and I want to keep the carb setup, but possibly upgrade to a bigger carb?

How would a turbo from a pajero 2.8L turbo work? would it be too small or too big? what sort of work is required to do the turbo setup. I know a custom manifold, bigger fuel pump etc. but does anyone know what things would work right?

i have a old fuego turbo laying round up at my old mans and thinking the turbo, carb and other bits could be used off that instead.

i will be rebuilding the motor and gearbox so thats no issue.

i know thats a bit long and confusing to read, but any hlep would be great.

Ive done a CA18 with silvia auto. Box is pretty long and I ended up getting a custom adapter to hilux transfer. Was in 413 not a Vit though. Terrano box will mate to ca18 (use CA bellhousing and oil pump and input shaft) but think front output will be on wrong side. Your biggest issue will be front diff and cv strength. There was a Turbo Escudo in our group at Manukau and he blew something like 5 cvs in 11 stages.

yea I have seen turbo vitara's and escudo's. so thats why I want one, Just need to figure out the best route to take. and yeap the diff and cv strength will be a bitch.

i`d say go the 4age route, i`ve heard they can bolt up (i`d assume with an adapter) and fit nice, then you can buy bolt on stuff and your away.

(I know next to nothing about vitara's FWIW)

The vitaras go really well with an sr20 motor in em. Friends one is untouchable on the road running a garrett of some description, but offroad i dunno. I suspect when he comes to take his baby offroad, it will spit cv's/diffs real easy.
Still 190km/h in a vitara with buckshots on is cool but rather scary.

well i guess i will have to just keep asking around before i decide how i will spend my hard earned coin.

I thought Warren from 4wdbits had something to do with a turbo, sr20 powered zuk in Auckland somewhere. I could be wrong. The truck i know of is starting to make some funny gearbox noises now too.

Talk to Rotozuk. A relative of his (forget which now) did that to his vitara. Not carbed though, TBI if I recall correctly.

how easy is it to do the 4age transplant? would that be more reliable and easier to get parts for than adding a turbo to the G16A?

I dont know. im sure you can. i just think i will ditch my g16a as it is on its way to becoming completely rooted and needs a full rebuild any way.

Ok I have decided to go for a turbo setup, now just trying to figure out what will be easier, draw through or blow through. I know with blow through you can at least have an intercooler, but would this really be needed off road as you dont usually move all that quick, so the intercooler wont be cold anyway, right?

Also any one got any advice as to the size of the turbo that i should use? and do you think that i would be best to get a bigger carb too? what approx sizes should it be?

And now my last question, is the fuel pump electric? would i be able to swap it out for something from something like a 2L engined cars fuel pump? would that be easy enough.

The point is you can supercharge or turbocharge ANY motor... if you have either lots of money OR money and the ability to do sht yourself.

As far as turbo choice- whats your motor redline at? if you are only wanting low boost (safe..no ic) and good spool I'd consider maybe a later model starlet turbo or anything else off a 1.5/smaller motor.

Be wary of two things- old high km turbos which require a rebuild will end up costing more in the long run after a rebuild etc.

Some factory turbos can have weird ass flanges that you cant easily get flanges off the shelf for. No big deal just means you'll have to takein a template and see a laser cutter.

the cheap chinese TM turbo's are bullshit.

changing the fuel pump will be easy enough if its electric. But its probably good enough for what you need to be honest.

Yes suck throgh is themost easy but you can not intercool as it will fill up with gas.

No experience with it but blow through can be a pain in the arse from everything ive heard.

IMO the easiest route would be to keep the factory ignition system and run a verysimple fuel only injector driver (megasquirt or similar) you will get better economy and be able to tune the engine far faster and more effectively than you could with suck or blow through- and it gives you the option to intercool.

Just something to think about.

If your vitara is carb then it will not have an elec fuel pump . It should have the fuel pump on the side of the head , drivers side rear , driven of the cam shaft .

have you considered a v6 option, i thought about it for all the work involved would be easier to get a grand vitara v6 or a comodore v6

Yea I thought about that too, and also looked into the J20a option too, but im still not really sure, hell i think i will just fit my coby extractors and get a larger carb for now. It all seems to be too much work
