Just when I thought it was all good........
The rear diff oil on my 89 Surf is leaking into the brake drum, so I took the drum off, extracting the axle from the rear diff housing and also found the bearings knackered, now having seperated the backing plate from the bearing housing, how on earth do you get the bearing out, need to replace the seals as well obviously, I'm guessing I need a big press???
Anyone know someone who can do this please.....been into Toyota with the axle, they want $404 parts and labour !!!!!!
YEAH RIGHT!!!!

no you don't neeed a press, just make a slide hammer out of a piece of pipe about 4mm wall thick, needs to be large enough in diameter to fit not only over the axle but over the part of the axle where the retainer fits, the pipe only needs to be about 300mm long.
Buy yourself a rear wheel bearing kit from saeco or similar and by looking at the bits in the box it will be easier to see what you have to do
basically easiest home way to do it..... remove the circlip, grind the old retainer off (just grind one edge carefully down to the axle, just be careful not to grind into the axle!!, then hit retainer with a cold chisel) remove bearing form cap and axle, put in new bearing and dust seal, put on axle, put on new retainer, then use slide hammer to set retainer all the way on till you can put on circlip

your going to pay $120 - 160 for a good wheel bearing kit.
Any decent machine shop should be able to press off the bearing /retainer and press on a new one. think i paid $40 bucks a side to have mine done recently.

go to bnt to get ya wheel bearing
ive had a mongrel time getting these bearings out
a couple of dodgy ways to get it out, are pull the axle out remove brake components and circlip etc holding bearing in
put a piece of wood on the ground and hold on to the backing plate, now hit the axle against the ground (spline side down) without bending the backing plate, you may needa keep repeating it, it may work, depends how stuck the bearing is.
another way is using an oxy acetylene gas axe set gas the inner race to just about through then use a cold chisel and hammer and crack the bearing off
where abouts in the country are you? ive got a big press at work i could do it properly in if you wanted
i want to make a tool for doing it when you dont have a press like a tube that goes over the axle and bolts to the hub then the tube capped with a thread on top that you can wind in to pull the hub up off the axle
cheers

I wouldn't bother bumping. Hosehustler's solution is the best you will get imo. You don't need to pay someone to do it, you may need to pay for the tube but you will have the 'tool' (like nzhunter wants) for next time

. You might even be able to rent it out for beer haha.
Also, BNT may do you a good deal on their retail price, but they will have more than likely bought their stock from Saeco or the one other place that imports bearings that slips my mind, so, you might as well cut out the middle man. I paid $140 for my last kit from Saeco and it was $300 at Ripco and $190 at BNT.

You can make a tool quite easy. Go to the wreckers and grab an old axle housing. usually free.
Cut the flange off the end and weld on a piece of pipe with a ring for a puller to fit over.
Easy to use and no risk of damage to the axle

Cheers Richard
