That was just a spectacular way to NOT climb a steep bank with a lip on the top... was trying to get up where three locked up trucks had just gone... open diffs not doing it for me.
I have some lokkas coming in from Oz at the moment, so hopefully next time I attack this little hill I can crawl up rather than nail it at the last bit, which did not help

The other thing that killed me was the driveshaft falling out (again!) at the top. 2WD is not a good look in that situation.
Seatbelt? I normally do but I can't say for sure, if I didn't that was a huge error of judgement or slip of my mind... not something I would normally do while attempting tricky climbs.

Just watched that video, and I have a few thoughts... it shows up several things all 4WDers should know.
1. Failed climb descent tecniques... know them, and practice so you do them automatically when you need them.
2. Know your trucks limitations and don't push the boundaries unless you are prepared for the consequences
3. Wear a seatbelt when attacking things (other than the usual 'no seatbelt' times, like deep river crossings etc) - I was horrified to watch this after the fact and realise I wasn't wearing it... I almost always do.
4. Don't involve other people in your silly "I can do that" ideas... I think my dog would rather have watched and laughed from the top with everyone else...
5. Fit a rollcage if you intend to do steep hillwork.
Note: I will not be doing this again until both my rollcage is completed (mandrel pipe bender on route from USA - will probably make a full exo), at least my front Lokka is installed, and I have resolved the front driveshaft "falling out" issue. I'm taking the fact I still have a truck as a sign that I have been warned from above
I hope others learn from this too... Once you get over the shock of what almost happened you will probably laugh yourself stupid at me... go ahead, be my guest I laughed myself stupid then started to analyse what went wrong... which I figure everyone can learn from.

I wasnt being a party pooper, but you saw what happened to rotazuk's freshley built zuk between hazards (I had just completed hillclimb) before he rolled 2 1/2 times over - lucky him and codriver were still wearin deatbelts and helmets. Happens when you least expect it

Diff locks aren't the answer to all 4WD failed attempts as in hill climbs they can cause the vehicle to go sideways. The other warning, taken from the video is when it goes wrong on the ascent , select reverse, look straight ahead, KEEP YOUR FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, and drive down.
All good fun till it goe's wrong. and 4WD helps.
Get Dirty, FITZY.

isnt that the truth... i watched a guy roll his cherokee on the creekbed...without his seatbelt on ...let me just say it wasn't pretty and he was a really lucky guy to be still entact....his truck was completly writin off....amazingly he drove it home though.....best of luck to u on yer next attempt steve...hope im there 4 it.....cheers turtle

Haha... yep will be good to take you out for a run up that hill when you get here Turtle

NOT!
...but I'll show you where it is... and you can walk up it
As for the difflock thing, what it would have allowed me to do was apply the power to the ground in a more controlled manner.... nothing more. I know diff locks are not a magical cure-all... it took rik 3 or 4 goes to get to the top before me and hes twin-locked!
As for correct decent tecnique, I was back at the bottom before I had a chance to think about it... I really don't remember to well what happened, and while I know what you are SUPPOSED to do, I can't tell you exactly what I did do, other than try to remember not to stomp on the brakes too hard so the steering could straighten me up...
Oh well, all done now... live and learn... just gotta keep away from Rik

is rik a bad influence then? or is he like me ....might as well go 4 it, whats the worst that could happen, if it does happen then deal with it.....

Not so much a bad influence, its just that he has a way of saying things that makes it seem so easy
...yeah, I guess that makes him a bad influence

I know what this is like.... . Sometimes things happen faster than we can think and i'm damn sure we have all been in a situation like this!!!!
The day the river claimed my truck it was a case of "f$%#" what now??? :
I was lucky..... and i caught some of it on video which i will post here once i can convert it from tape to computer. Good for a laugh if nothing else. As you said its not till the adrenaline stops pumping that you sit back and realise just how close that was.........Lucky, lucky, lucky

you need to be careful what type of locker you fit to the front end as it affects your turning radius in 4WD.........I'm sure others can elaborate on this.
