pulled my broken front diff out 2day, took apart to have a look and both spider gears are missing afew teeth. dont really have enuf money for a new diff AND a locker to stop it breaking again.... y not kill 2 birds with one stone, could i just weld it up?? what are the disadvantages to this? can it be done even with missing teeth?? i have a set of manual hubs i could put on to stop drive shaft spinning when in 2wd but even if i didnt, it would just use more gas wouldnt it
pete
why not weld it?
Its an option... but not a very good one really. You run the risk of leaving things engaged and going straight ahead when you really wanted to turn.
If you did it you would have to fit the manual hubs to ensure you could disengage the front axle from the wheels.
Give me a call re: the SAS... I might have an option for you on that one... kind of a quick'n'dirty option... I have just obtained a solid axle surf (old LN60) which we could do a body and drivetrain swap on... haven't given it huge thought yet, but should be pretty do-able. Failing that just the front end swap including old push-pull steering to get you going then look at crossover and all the fancy bits later on.
There was a guy selling a blown-motor surf on trademe but it was in auckland otherwise that would have been a good one to buy and strip...
Anyway, my thoughts... the front welded diff isn't a great idea... better to pull the half shafts and leave it 2WD until you can do something to it.

if its only the spider gears gone then you dont need a new diff. the locker replaces all the spider and side gears in the front diff (would be just the same as welding the spiders up)unlike the rear where it uses the original side gears. So if your crown wheel and pinion are sweet ie no teeth missing then you just need the locker to replace the shitted out side and spider gears. I wasnt so lucky, my spider gears were fine it was my crown wheel and pinion that was stuffed. If you still cant afford a locker then I have a spare set of spiders sitting here from my diff that i will never be using again. actually i have two sets! Dunno how that will go with matching your existing teeth. I personally would get the locker. $350 and its all fixed up.
