Going to be helping put some rust at bay on a Land Rover chassis & firewall. Rust varies from surface to bubbles to holes. Being parked outside in the bush, the aim is to stop the majority of the rust before the vehicle gets restored - not sure how many years it'll have to wait since it's #2 in the queue.
Since this old girl is parked 1hr from civilization, we'll need to bring with us everything in advance.
Done 'search' but just as confused in some regards.
So:
For surface rust: Wire brush/sandpaper (which type & grit?) down to bare metal
For rust bubbles: Angle grind the bubbles down to bare metal
For holes: Tidy up the edges with metal file - no welder available
Is the above right ??
For painting over this all, use what?
A rust converter undercoat and another coat of something?
We want to keep the $$ down on this patching work. During the restore it'll get galv and/or por15 treatment.
There will be time for two coats, one on the evening of the 1-day working bee and a 2nd the following morning just before departure. The next working bee would be up to 6 months later for anything not finished/reached.
Thanks

what about sandblasting ??
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

Have done a bit of repair work on steel structures and found if bare steel is painted to late in the day it doesnt cure properly before the morning, low temp, moisture......... if time is the issue could try a two pot mix, drys pretty quick with a hair dryer, a bit nasty but seems to work, generally speaking, gloss repels water more than matt colours.
If you have a angle grinder the wire wheels from bunnings seem to work well, about $20 each and takes rust off with little effort

Thanks for tips. I know sandblasting is the best way forward but for paddock repairs this isn't an option.
Surface rust can be dealt to with a metal wire brush/wheel and the slightly heavier with an angle grinder.
Does anybody know how I can stop rust which is heavily bubbled?

only way to stop it is cut it out, but as its not an option a rust converter or even Wattyl KillRust I think its called would probably be best/cheapest option. Should be able to get it from Hardware shop maybe even Ripco

are rust bubbles not caused by rust coming through from BEHIND the pannel?
phone Ross Bolus (secretary of the BOP club) He'll save you.
