.
I'm got some learning to do with Toyota/Dihatsu stuff.
This Rugger is the same as the Toyota Blizzard.
The Buggered-Rugger had the 2.8 Diesel in it.
Now that 2.8 is a Toyota 3L engine correct??
The mounts and bellhousing etc etc for a 2.8 (3L) are the same as the 2.4 (2LT) Tin Top, or is it the Alloy Top that are the same as??
I know there is a difference between the two generations of 2LT.
Any how, if i can pick up a 2LT for cheap enough, thats whats going in it, otherwise i'll spend $2000 on a 2.8 (3L) and throw the snail of a 2.4 on it.
I like Diesels, and after buying an adaptor plate, fly wheel, clutch, bell housing mounts, engine and all the odds and ends that ya need to put a Petrol engine in a Diesel i have decided i can't be assed.
So can anyone confirm the 3L (2.
is what i'm after as an origional replacement engine??

I can confirm that the engine mounts for the 2L-T and the 2L-TE SHOULD be the same... pretty certain the blocks are identical, as are the engine mounts.
Also almost 100% sure the 3L (yep, the 2.
has the same engine mounts... I am certain a mate did a 2.4 to 2.8 swap on his with no engineering changes... I will try and get hold of him and ask...
Failing that I have a Petrol Hilux 3Y 2 litre motor that produces about 16.3HP
you could always install that
The 2.8 is not that much more grunty than a 2L-T, but if you bolt a hairdryer on the top they go really well...

Would the 3y bolt up to the bell housing and the mounts??
Probably plenty of grunt for the little Rugger.............
I am basically after the cheapest option to get it mobile for the mean time, then once it has proved its self, or its turned into a respectable 4x4, then i'll worry about a half decent transplant.

3Y engine mounts are about 120mm further to the rear I think, and slightly different. You also need a Y-series bellhousing and assuming theres a G52 or W56 box in the rugger then it will bolt together.
$200 for good running complete (starter, alternator, everything) 3Y and bellhousing and engine mounts cut from a hilux frame so you could weld em in place if you want it... but check first that the gearbox is a W or G series... if its an R series it won't work...

Did some work on a mates Rugger once, including gearbox bearings and some diff work, and his g/box was completely different to a Hilux.
I came away thinking they were a bit like "box of chocolates, you never know what ya gonna get"
Better to wait and see what it has, but I ve got a spare 3Y to 4 speed bell housing here.
Oh yeah don't forget to SOA, His one was good at dragging that heavy chassis along the track.

;-p
If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
Spent all weekend bonding with the new house. Couple of things left to paint and its all done and ready to move into.
The Rugger, well, i dunno. Is it a good idea. To late i guess. Think i will go pick it up on Friday, then store it out at my Parents place for a while untill i get the section sorted at the new place and my bike on the road.
That will give me time to sort out the easiest and cheapest engine option.
Then i'll hit it properly.
Just need to sort out a trailer to go get it from Whangamata.
The reply about the trans:
hi peter i had a look at box its in my garage but couldnt find any numbers but have build plate nos : eng DL
chassis::JDAOOOF7OOO634036
trim:YG12 TYPE:F7ORV hope this helps
So thats not much to go on at all

Yeah man, I was gonna see if i could borrow Dans trailer, but its a POS with no ramps and a tipping deck, so if its half decent, yep, see if ya can get it!!!!!
Have ya got Friday off??
I'm thinking of taking the day off on Friday and doing the mission, so if your free, the extra set of hands and ideas to get it on the trailer would be bloody good!!!!!
Thinking of chocking the wheels on the trailer, or locking the brakes, and then winching it on

Right, its at home sitting in the shed

Now, between what you guys have posted here and the parts i have etc etc this is were i'm at.
It has a Diahatsu gearbox. Well yeh, no shit.

I wonder if the box and transfer case is the same between the Rugger and the Blizzard. If so, as Klompy says, a Blizzard bellhousing may be of use.
What i have decided i really want to do is grab Steve's 3Y and fire that in it. Nice simple reliable donk, just what ya want when your in the middle of no where stuck in a huge bog.
What i need to find out from anyone that might know:
How similar a Blizzard G/B is to a Rugger G/B and a Hilux G/B (looks nothing like a Hilux G/B to me)
A 2Lt bellhousing won't fit a 3Y will it.
Anyone got a diahatsu 2.8 diesel kicking around in the shed????
Might be going back to the 3L if the Blizzard/Rugger gearbox's are similar.
Hmm, yeah, but the thing thats starting to look abit grim is what the hell gear box am i going to bolt anything to
It is possible i may end up sourcing a Hilux gear box to open up my options for a powerplant.
Its highly unlikely that diahatsu box is going to be good for anything, and if i break things, the Hilux box is the better option for availability of bits to fix it.
If i go down that road, it opens me up to far more engine options.........
Anyone got a lux box and T/Case kicking around???

Yep, I got me a plan.
Thanks guys.
I think the 3y's spoken for now Steve. Hope we can find a cheap freight company !!!!
Ben, lets see what this dude wants for the box.
Then the fun part of fiting it and sorting out drive shafts
I'm 99% sure the rear diff head is in the center, will have to double check.
Plan of events:
Source transmission and engine.
While thats happening, doctor the body work eg, cut roof off, make plywood doors, cut guards etc etc
Fit engine and trans.
Once mobile, figure out the cheapest option for getting the 6 point roll cage sorted. Hopefully I can find some stockcar guys that will throw a basic cage together for me for based on a MSNZ design, than i can add a couple of bars to support the body to compensate for the lack of roof.
Then the suspention work begins.
To start with, it will be extended shackles and the removal of a leaf or two, especially in the front with the lighter motor, and remove the rear overload leaf.
Then the diffs get the treatment................
I would say it will get Hilux Diffs one day in the near future........
Lets hope i can get the Lux box in with out the horses dick crossmember.
Thanks guys.
