looking at buying first boat

Post by muskie »

getting fed up with surf casting and want a boat, dont have a lot of cash maybe up to around $5k never owned a boat, just want to go harbour fishing, tauranga etc so no big bars to cross. any boats to avoid, any tips welcome.. would like aluminiun but dont think the budget will allow, been looking at sea nymph 14'6 type boats... just want to see if we will use it over the summer and if i dont sell on next summer.. boats seem to become garden ornaments alot of the time..

Hi ya, always had cheap boats and bought and sold plenty. 4 months ago I sold a very old aluminium stabicraft for 4k. I would stick with aluminium for a 1st boat personally. Hard to hide repairs on them as previous damage can be hidden on glass boat. The reason I sold last boat was because I didn't use enough (garden ornament) - fuel goes bad, trailers need warrants, motor needs service. I am now trying a kayak. My old man use to be in papamoa and had great success out of a 12ft tinny.

A couple of other bits of advice. Fish at your feet - you don't always have to go far out. Make sure you take safety seriously otherwise you can end up in the shit - life jackets, flares, mobile, vhf - epirb if you can afford it. Your lifes worth it.

Boats hold there value pretty well so you can always try and sell if you don't like. As long as the motor still works and so on.

Good luck mate.

for that price you could get an old 14-16 foot alloy wit an old motor or a old 14-16 foot fibreglass wit a newer motor, ide buy a fibreglass if wanting a heavy sea worthy boat, but a alloy for harbour and coastal stuff... go an alloy

thanks for the advice, i have gone the tinny way, 14'6 leda craft, very tidy boat 1993 boat and engine (force 40) serviced locally since new so i talked to the marine shop and he said its very rarely used but serviced well so i booked it in for a service ready for holiday boating and fishing. a little more than i wanted to pay at $6000 but its not an old nail so paid more. fingers crossed ay.. this needs to be a pleasurable experience, its took me a year to get the missus to finally agree :D

WELL THE GUY CHANGED HIS MIND ABOUT SELLING THE DAY I WAS PICKING UP, GOT A FEELING HE SEE ANOTHER IDENTICAL ONE ON TRADE ME AT $9000 (WHICH DIDNT SELL) I WAS NOT HAPPY!
