6.5 v8 chev diesel turbo. Anyone running one?

Post by flyingbrick »

Anyone running one of these in NZ? They seem like a pretty good option from everything I have read. Would like to buy an engine and slowly accumulate everything that's needed (adapter plates etc) for the swap into my GQ. There seems to be a fairly good following in AUS with the engines in tourers and towing rigs but none in any comp trucks- im presuming weight is an issue as its a huge lump of iron to have in there.

These are the specs.... Are they as impressive as they look to me? how do they compare to a turbo TD42?

# Power / Torque: 215 hp (160 kW) @ 3,200 rpm / 440 lb·ft (597 N·m) @ 1,800 rpm
# Max RPMs: 3,400

Talk to Blackdeath, he was looking at turbo 4.2 taken out to 4.5 and pumping out 300kw...............

from what I have read in aussie threads the chevs have a short life span, try outerlimits
Growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional

For all the effort involved in doing a Chev 6.5 conversion, you would be better to spend your time and money on a decent turbo / intercooler / fuel pump setup for your TD42.

Yeah don't waste your time. Spend the same money on the TD42 will have a more powerful lighter motor.

Now if you are talking Duramax or something like that...........

The reason why Safari's are pretty shit off road in NZ, is because of the weight over the front axle.

The TD42 weighs a wopping 500+kg's.

You want to add more weight to it???

Do some off road driving in your truck first, and you will see what I'm on about.

Better option would be as above with a simple turbo set up, but you MUST get the injector pump set up accordingly.

Otherwise, go for marks adaptor kit and LS1 or LS2, same amount of work as the chev 6.5 but light and more powerful, also reckon they will be cheaper to run than a diesel before long

The whole point (and this is leading on from darins post in the TD42 turbo thread) is that I in no way care how the power is delivered. Sounds shit but I don't. I don't care if its from a truck motor or a petrol v8.... The fact is that ATM any power is better than NONE .

Spoke to a number of people over the weekend about the chev v8 (including one bloke who just happened to have installed a few) and they all said the same thing: they are heavy and huge and unreliable

Turbo diesel is by far the most cost effective way of making it driveable and I cant wait to get my turbo setup in and running. near new turbo is on the way as well as all flanges and pipework. SO excited.

So pretty much its topic closed.

Good move :D

What ya gonna do about your injector pump??

Ya can't fit a turbo with out modifying it with a boost compensator and all that.

Well you can, but it sort of defeats the purpose of fitting the turbo.

I hear the necessary parts of a TD27t pump will fit.

There's also a very clever group of guys in Rotovegas who build some amazing injector pumps

I phoned Aaron and spoke to him yesterday about them (diesel pumps). Learned shitloads about the pumps and how they work etc and also thought his opinions on turbo choice were interesting and comforting.

Will turbo first without modifying diesel pump (will just crank the screw a little)- then grab a modified one off him once used to that. Then I'll be happy

Without a boost compensator I will just use care with the loud pedal. I'm used to doing that now- I find smoke embarrassing

My last turbo purchased for this build turned out to be horse shit. This ones from a brand new car and has very few kms on it. Car was purchased new for use as a track car and this unit was not needed.

As always- I'll post lots of pics as I can  I'm gonna learn a shitload making my first exhaust manifold :P

I ran my TD42 with the standard pump the whole time I had it. So it smoked a bit until the boost got up. With a side pipe it was always fun with boyracers who sat at the lights with their windows down. I could fill their cars with black smoke before the lights turned!!! Not very PC but compared to there BS loud exhuasts that don't do anything but make noise, who cares!!!
