What do disc pads shims do?

Garage talk. Anything from mounting a winch to water proofing the electrics.

What do disc pads shims do?

I'm sorting front brakes on my safari & noticed they're missing the shims that clip on to the pads, do they do anything important? It's been running without them so should be ok?

pretty sure they are anti squeal shims,
