Thought you guys might know a bit more about these. WHat should I be looking out for when buying? My mechanic says the gear boxs should be watched...

terranos/pathfinders have a rust problem behind the rear seat, theres a page on www.lvvta.org.nz about it. you can get a safari for that sort of coin which is better offroad and you can modify better.

Any suggestions as to where to look for a safari other than TradeMe?

Trade Me is about the best bet for Safari's although go by the interior/how it drives rather than speedo readings.
My latest GQ has 275000 on it, and is in better condition than the last one which had 170000.

Had a terrano, bought a safari. Terrano steering shits itself with the rough stuff over time. Keep alook out everywhere, sometimes you might pick up one at a decent price in some small caryard. They seem to go quickly on TM at the moment, in high demand I suppose. Where abouts you located, if not in CHCH, I could look in the "Buy/Sell" I read each week if you like. What sort of spec do you want?

Oh right, I'm in Dunedin...

Would be great if you could Al... I might go have a quick look round a few yards tomorrow. Am just looking for a tidy truck, nothing special. Snorkel, good tyres, low km's, canopy if its a ute, that sort of thing.

Very rare manual Terrano

Bloody rare indeed if it has a 2.7 TD rotary in it?

Everyone bags these Terrano's, but they are a very capable truck. mine has done very well with some other tucks on the tracks. Sure the front steering is a weak point, but there are fixes for this too.
At the end of the day it is what you are comfortable driving too.
The pre 94 models, esp the two door ones, have an issue with rust under the rear seats.

I figure the rotary is a bit of a screw up so will keep it in mind. That first link has already gone and also someone in Dunedin got a good deal on an 89 surf yeaterday so I guess I gotta be quick!!

Is there a cure for the back seat rust in the terranos?

You can have the rust cut out/floor replaced, but looking at $$$, so much better off spending more on a rust free one to start with.

Not sure, someone will confirm, but I think the early ones were double skinned under the rear seats so moisture would build up in there, the problem was solved (?) in the later versions

They are all double skinned as far as I know, but the problem was addressed in the later models, 94 plus. Just have a good look under the rear seats where the seatbelt anchors and under the body there too to check this out. You will see where the join is.

You mentioned you are looking for a low km's model but given the era of 4wd you are after this may be hard to find.

If you found a D21 shape Terrano with 150km or less on it I would be looking very hard at the history and getting the speedo checked.

I have a 91 Terrano, 2.7 turbo manual with 275km on it and it runs like new, uses no oil or water so don't let the km's put you off.

My '95 has only 140K on the clock, I started off with 76K in 2004 when I got it, so no high mileage is not an issue in my mind.
As per the 2nd or so post, look on the LTSA site for info on the rust issue(s) and you will know where to look when tyre kicking.

Thanks guys, am leaning towards a safari now anyways.... But... Would 300 000k be too much? I mean some say not to worry about mileage but there must be a point at which it does matter...

If it's in good condition, and drives well, 300km is ok. I'd pay more for a higher mielage vehicle than fr a lower one that has obviously done more or had a hard life.

What $$ are they asking?

Get a compression test done, and take it for a drive. My latest has 277km and I paid $7300, in pretty good condition, but was sick of looking at those under 200km that were in poor condition, or were obvious they had a lot more on them
