been waiting a while for a friend of a friend to get in these LED LENSER torches.

Supposed to be the bees kness in torches.
Fulla at the hunting shop reckoned he uses his head lamp for spotlighting

So I've been hanging out to get them, and they finally turned up today.

so now its slightly dark outside I went out for a looksie

highly impressed with the distance they can achieve from such a little unit

I got the P7 Torch and the H7 Headlamp

waiting till its really dark outside, but so far the headlamp seemed to get at least 200m and the torch was easily spotting a tree top 300m away.

will report back late on the pitch black test,

can't wait to check them out in the bush over xmas

been trolling ebay and picked up a new 5watt cree led headtorch and it is the shiz.spread or focus beam .bright as fcuk can see things out to well over 100mtrs .i'm impressed as .only cost $14.76 us dollars incl freight.might have to have a light off skiddy at ivans

i hate to tell ya but you will be regretting that.

first one broke the plastic backing. 2nd one broke the back, the hinge, where the lights fit. i could not be bothered getting it replaced under warranty yet again. it got super glued together but broke in a different place !

also the big light get dim fairly quick so you spend most of the time with half light (brightness varies with battery charge). you will notice the big light will be as bright as the small light. thats the down side of not having regulated led lights.

I have noticed that mine does use up batteries pretty fast. That's why I always carry spares. But (touch wood) I haven't had any problems as far as breaking it.

I wonder if the later models are better with power usage..

should I be carrying spares for a 4 day trip in the bush if its only gonna get used for less than an hour each night

later led's don't drop the light so much as the battery is used so they could be better. but its an inherent problem with any non-regulated torch (including normal bulbs). the curse with LED of course is due to the long run times you spend a lot of the time at lower light levels. ie it may only be 50% of the time at low light but that still can be 50 hours of use ! otherwise your replacing 1/3 used batteries all the time.
some of the review sites have graphs of brightness vers run time which is a great way of seeing how it behaves.

if looking for a led light then find a fully regulated one. they give constant brightness (until battery gives out completely) and can be fed a wide range of batteries. led lenser have it in some of their torches but not their headlamps.

no, its fine for that amount of use.

I've heard of those ones that don't dim, no warning, they just go out. But yeah. The regulated ones sound good.

most fully regulated ones have multi light levels and often just drop down to a lower level when the battery is about to run out. eg gives you an hour or so on low.

just be aware there is regulated and thens there is fully regulated.
difference being regulated just limits the power down but light will go dim once battery drops past the limit point, battery has to give more than the led can consume (often called buck regulator).
where as fully regulated will give it constant light, you can run on almost any size battery (often called "boost and buck" regulators).

pete, mine uses the batteries quickly as well, i always put it down to when its in my pack, the red light always bumped and gets turned on using up all my battery power.

never bothered to buy new batteries for it haha

Was out with this scottish fella a few weekends ago and he pulled out a $200 odd head torch. We were at Howletts hut and could see down to around about the tarn bivy and all the way over to sawtooth ridge. farrrkin long way!!! So I grabbed out my $80 energiser 'hard yakka' head torch. Its my head torch i use every day at work for under houses/in ceilings. I could shine it just as far! It has a spotlight, diffuser and those funny red/green leds aswell. When the batteries get flat it flashes the red led and then shuts of the main light. But it never dims the light down. So i guess that means it's regulated. And very robust and splash proof. When i say splash proof I drop it in a few puddles and was sweet as. But I have also dropped it in a phone cable pit that was full of water and I had to dry it for a couple of days.

I've got the biggest one that runs on AA's. Awesome light spotted a couple deer with it, find that they don't seem to panic in the white LED light as they do in the yellow. Got a small one that clips to the top of the .22 for shooting rabbits. Does the trick.

Once these school holidays are over I'm real keen to get out there on some farms and cull some vermin's. Got a good stock pile of ammo I need to get rid of.
