I guess this weekend I'd like to take the 40 out n get stuck somewhere.
Anyone got any suggestions?

I'm premiture on most things so sue me.

Before this weekend I've managed to achieve sorting out a couple of heating issues on my truck myself. (the squeeze has come on from the partner to not spend so much on the truck ). So I'm doing things myself.

You would think with a big radiator like the one I have would be good enough to cool things down. Well it does most of the time. Till you tow something heavy up a steep hill. So I did a little door knocking on a couple of other radiator shops round Chch.
I tried one suggestion. First I went from a 200F to 180F thermostat.


That helped, but it still got to hot.
Then I tried the second suggestion. And faaark me. It worked!
I offset the cooling fan by a third of it's blade width by removing it and making spacers. Pretty simple to do. Just had to alter the inlet pipe at the top so it would clear the fan and shazzam! Done!

Now the cooling is better I'm happy. But I'm still thinking of getting some more flutes cut on the bonnet to let more hot air out.

While I had the radiator inlet pipe and air intake pipe off I tidied up some more wiring. Moved it from under the airbox to where it is now.


I'm loving doing this shit myself. it's a good feeling.

I'm bias. I know they are half the price of ARB air locker. And that's cool.
Just, I saw what one did to a diff the other day after it was installed for only a week. And it did it on road. The opinion of the dude doing the work was, he didn't like em, and from what I saw, I'd agree.

You are biased!
Granted, I would not like one in the rear and thankfully my Prado came with the factory electric one there so I am lucky.

However in the front end they have both disadvantages and advantages.
I really like the fact that I can be climbing a nasty track using both front wheels locked and then come to a tight hairpin and the truck just steers around it cos the Un-locker senses the difference in wheel torque and releases.
In my experience an ARB styles one does not do this tight radius cornering and often they have issues either with locking or unlocking when you want them too, hence the Howatt style BB ones from Welliewood.

Its been in the front of my truck for 130k kms and no issues thus far. (touches wood)

Not quite clear on your fan mod but interested to hear more.
Did you space it forward to the rad cowl or back towards the motor?
I'm guessing back, so the air spills off the tips of the blades using centrifugal force?

Well to start the weekend off I chopped the muffler out of my exhaust because it was too quiet. Now I have no muffling what so ever and am now officially deaf! Thanks Chevrolet! (sounds so wicked though). But for the rest of the weekend I will be taking apart the front axle to throw a new diff head in and then I will actually be able to put the transfer case in to 4 wheel drive, yah! Oh and dinner at pongoroa pub with the Costa Plenty Club too. Hope the lux makes it out there

Finally got my hood insert back on the truck yesterday then i noticed i have a dam torn Cv boot, What a time to get one right before Xmas. just as i planned to get a new muffler after xmas so thatl have to wait, what a bummer.

fitted an Airtec snorkel to mates 80 so far thats it, gonna go Xmas shopping for my boy soon

my plans for this weekend are to find out whats wrong with the clutch in the surf and try to fix it...

With the ARB lockers n switches in my truck. When both lockers are on you're right, turning tight isn't an option. But all it takes is a flick of the switch and round you go.

Re the radiator. Yeah I moved it further away from the radiator n closer to the motor. The fella at the radiator shop showed me the research on paper that proved it works.

The main thing is it works and now my truck looks like a proper Paj again

Quite a few years ago I put a 50mm body lift on my 60 series cruiser using timber blocks (just had to get the tyres on, you know how it is ) Any way, it actually went through a WOF before I put the nylon blocks in .

Trying to get all the annoying little bits done on the mutt (brake line brackets, fuel line brackets air line for diffs, trans etc)before slapping the body back on.

made up a "waterblaster pipe thingie out of a piece of old brake line and sliped it in and behind the flywheel to blast out the last of last weeks mud out of the pressure plate, bugger me if there wasnt at least a kg of fine mud washed out! .. going to do it a couple more times then make up a shit plate so it dosnt happen again.

the A & P Show bought up a small temp problem, the Mistress wasnt overheating but was running hotter than it should have (just on 3/4) the prob was in the position of the electric fan, it was bolted directly to the radiator which means it only cooled the area of the fan blades (about 1/2 the radiator area) .... sooo today I knocked up this pigassugly shroud, it pulls the fan about 40mm (all the room ive got) off the radiator and allows it to draw air from accross 100% of the fins, hopefully allowing better cooling.




now to pull it all out and paint it

Went to car tune and stared at my lux ute body that I cant have yet ........ and spent/tied up too much money on ensuring the truck gets a few little issues sorted out.

Was sick of a juddering clutch pedal. So I thought I'd get under there and check things out myself.
What you're looking at is the "Marks adapter bowl housing kit" between the box n the motor. The adjustable shaft behind the thrust bearing needed lubing. I've done this before. Though it's easy to do, it only stays lubed for a couple of months then it binds up when it gets dry.
I think the next time the box is out I'll drill a hole to that dry point and tap a grease nipple there. Maybe turn a groove in the contact area for the grease to sit round the whole diameter of the shaft.
Knowing how this problem recurs every couple of months I would of though the crowd that makes the kit would have done this mod.

While I was under there I noticed the wiring cover to the starter motor close to the headers had melted. Also one terminal point off the starter motor had been bent back as it was to close to the headers, I guess. But now it's rivet is loose. (it wiggles round) Bugga, coz that's a new starter motor.



So I've heat shielded the wiring.
But I think that starter motor will have to come back out.

I wonder how skids achievements are going for this weekend. I hear he's gone bush for a few days.

Finally put me new driveshaft in the Jeep. Think im gonna sell it now. Having only 2 seats is starting to piss me off

Not easily, and when I do then Ill need to modify roll cage. Pain in the ass. Other than that its a amazingly capable car. Scares me what it can do!

Installed a after market glow plug timer salvaged from the parts truck, not much of a challange, Tab "A" Slot "B" type of a thing.
Got new "farm jack" seems to do the trick. Almost forgot how quick the handle wants to go up when lowering.

Arrived back from aus last night and awoke to find all my new bits i've been ordering for the past two months sitting in the garage. It's gonna be a fun week.

Fitted a new headunit - What a pain in the ass...
During the week had somethings fixed on the safari... new clutch, handbrake cable, hub seal, radius arm bushes and a new rim. So now hopefully can put some money towards modifying it not repairing it!!
Early 2010 im aiming to have a bigger lift and lockers.
