Failed a WOF - just what i need

Post by nzhunter »

Hi all,
I got the hilux sorted so took it in to get re-registered today. Got there only to hear
:o "ahhh.... yeh it was registered after '92 and since it was written off through a insurance company you ....ah.... need a complience check and repair certificate.....on top of the re-registration...."
In our language that means its gona cost s*** load more then what they first quoted us (quoted $130 now hitting around $600)
Anyways I got the complience and WOF done found 13 things wrong

The list:
What major things and needs repair certificate
- Distortion front cross member
- Rust RF inner guard (I still havent found it)
- RR rear leaf hangers bent replace cheak for distortion - (what the hell is a leaf hanger??)
- Something bout rear shoes
- Something bout front rotors
- Front leaf springs reset / replace

all the rest is piss poor easy

Now what help I need: :?:
- a good panel beater in CHCH (south pref) able to do repair certificate?
- Since the front leaf suspension needs resetting or replacing should I just give it a lift by replacing front and rear springs? maybe new shocks while im at it? prices?
- Or where do I go to get springs reset?? pref lifted
- Whats a leaf hanger?? Where do i look??
- Wheres a good place to get brakes done??

Any help on these things wuld be awesome.

Budget of $1k disapated quickly lol

Cheers,

howzit what a bummer........

a leaf hanger (leaf shackle)is the link that joins the leaf spring to the chassis with swings in a foward /back motion helping the suspension flex(some are fitted with grease nipples),look at the rear of youre truck and youle find x2 of them running vertical holding the leafs on (about 100m.m or so long).

and go to bellamy and east in chch(falsgrave st)for youre spring reseting, but talk with steve(supralux)1st cos he can prob help you with everything and will prob do you a good deal on some NEW leafs etc....

and i didnt realise hiluxs had an inner guards ,well they do but how the hell does plastic rust?

and with the panel beating/rust,try RUST CUTTERS(i think they are still there)marrylands place, near addington racecourse......

hope this helps dan good luck bud

I would be carefull about lifting it etc etc before its final inspection. Generally they require them to be as per factory spec, especially with suspension.

bring it down to the shed Friday and I'll show you what they are talking about... I'll be down there preparing the MU for cert most of the day.

I would think they will require the front rotors to be replaced with new, and the rear drums possibly as well (although if its only new rear shoes then thats not so bad)... thats pretty standard in compliance... and that will hurt... Rotors for the front are around $100/pr new and it will take a good afternoon to replace both - its mucky slow and annoying and you could also end up needing to replace studs as well. I can do that, or you can do it yourself... like I said, its not hard, just slow and mucky. I can get you the bits you need, or show you where to get them tho.

As soon as Compliance was mentioned you should have run a mile... it gets VERY expensive. I'm surprised you don't need to replace all the seatbelts as well.

The lifted new springs should be ok for it, as they use all standard mounts and bushes, and since they are new they will most likely be more 'acceptable' than reset old ones (which will flatten out really quickly again... 2-3 months if you are lucky - talk to Anton at Bellamy and East in Falsgrave St). As suggested by Krawlr (thanks for offering to give away discounts on my behalf  ) I can sort you out with a deal on something new if you want to go that way I'm sure. But all of this compliance malarky is going to give your $1k budget a rude shock :P

The front crossmember can not easily be fixed due to it being a welded in member and box-section... thats what made me write off the last Hilux d-cab I had from an accident... and now they have seen it you'll be hard pressed to 'hide' it. Ask them if it can be plated over for strengthening rather than repaired...

The leaf hanger is (depending which end) either the thing the front of the leaf bolts in to or the little bit of tube the shackle bolts though at the rear of the spring. They are probably refering to the front of the rear spring on one side being bent as they are quite light construction. easily straightened tho.

Anyway... hope that helps some... give me a shout if you want some firm pricing on anything, but as I say - I'll be at the shed all friday so bring it down then and I'll show you what you need to do.
