Gedday out there ,ive been reading for a while and decided its about time i got into it.
Im currently bashing round in an 85 beam axle surf with 50mm bodylift, 50mm old man emu liftsprings ,, new 33''x12.5x15 Kumho Road Ventura MT directional tyres on 10'' whitespoke rims and heaps of aftermarket
dints and sctatches and how could i forget the dying and smoky 2lt...
Ive decided im sick of slashing my new tyres on the inner guards
and ive had enough of my W shaped front leafs...

so im gunna throw the rear springs up the front and install some of those nice and flexible old coon leafs in the rear ...
all this and more has to go on the nice shiny strippd new 87 ifs chassie sitting in my driveway, coz iv got this interesting issue with crabwalking (bought it that way i swear)
Anyway the question i have is should i reset the origonal rear springs for the front or can i use the 50mm lift emus without too much drama..??
any advice is appreciated .
cheers Mark.

youre talking about stealing the 87 body for your old chassis.. or are you going to SAS it ?

yea mate theres hundreds of us lurking down this way
im gunna use the 87 chassie and SAS it, as ive found the standard chassie ant that strong so il reinforce it while im at it..plus all the steering box mounts etc are already there fo the crossover steering...

Depends how much lift you want ??
Here's a pic of the diff between a set of not to bad front springs and standard rear ones (I was down low when I took the pic so thats the extra diff)
From memory it was about 80mm taller, so with your OME springs you'd be looking at around 120mm taller

plus what ever extra you add from your mounts at the front

how big'a wheels did you want to run ??

hmm maby il use the OME springs for a laugh an block the back up to suit im planning on running 35s with pleanty of room to spare...
iv just scored a 6 cycl single cam efi turbo engine out of an 82 supra with loom ecu and trans prety much everything exept the body ,I dunno if il use it yet but does anyone know anything about these engines reliability, suitibility etc????

Sounds like a cool project... few thoughts:
1. beef up the chassis around the steering box if you're gonna run big donuts - they are prone to crack. easy to do while you have it out.
2. Use the springs as they are, the front will squish em in no time at all. Also find a thick overload leaf and cut it down to its about 300mm long with the hole in the middle and bolt that to the underside of the drives side pack at least, stops the front packs from getting bent over the axle... flattens them too fast if you don't.
3. make a 50mm drop front mount to avoid steering clearance issues
4. Toy 6-cyl motors are far stronger than the Hilux 5-speed, so go for it... more ponies help you clear all that southland muck outta your tread

I take it that its a 1G? Should be fine, one of the board members has one in his (non-turbo) and it rocks. One with a hairdryer on it should be lots of fun...
Post pics... we all live for project pics...

Why change the chassis and go to all the trouble of chopping the IFS ?
The solid axle chassis is the better of the two, save your time and $$$ for the good stuff.

yea i had that same thought but i cant find another beam axle chassie and i want to use mine in one peice while i modify the spare(i live beside the bush and il go into withdrawl)... plus itil be a good mission
might change my mind closer to the time, but at this stage i think il give it a go
