Injector pump Issue?

Have got a bit of an issue with my 5L in the Hilux it first showed up about 2 hours in to the Akas trip last week. Basically it behaves like its bouncing off a rev limiter at about 2000rpm and blows grey smoke out the back. It idles ok. On the way out of the Akas I was towed out with the engine on idle so I had PS and brakes. Left it for about 20 minutes whilst everyone was airing up at the bottom of the track. Got back in the hilux and went for a bit of a test drive to work out what to do and it drove like nothing was wrong. I was able to drive it 15km at highway at 90-100km from Totara park round to puahatuanui inlet. It then started having the same issue again, drove the rest of the way at 50km/hr as I could get it into 4th and 5th gear. At the time the consensus was diesel bug as I did have it sitting for 4 months prior to getting this motor going. I have done about 350kms since finishing the motor swap. I filled the tank up about 250kms ago. Since getting it home I've replaced the fuel filter, established there was nothing growing and no water in the fuel system.
I have put 1 and a bit bottles of Wynns diesel treatment in the tank (half a tank left). Also don't see any issues with the air intake system.
Yesterday, it was running again fine so drove it about 10 km or so at no more than 50km/hr but then got the same symptoms (if anything a bit worse). So seems to be temperature related.

Have pretty much decided it needs to go to a diesel mechanic to have the injectors/pump locked at. But is there anything cheaper I should try before hand?

Also was going to look at going to North City Diesel on the tip road out in Porirua as they seem to be the only diesel place local and within driving distance for this POS.

check the screen on the pipe in the tank most fuel tanks have a screen in the tank itself and if it gets blocked it can let some fuel through but not enough to fuel the engine properly when it is working hard

Will there be a small gauze filter on the inlet for the pump? Have seen them in others maybe this has ne too and it is blocking up. But having said that it would be all the time not intermitant or temp related.

could also be a loose fitting in the fuel line, when i got my 70 it ran ok if you kept it running, then if you let it idle or turn it off it wouldnt run properly. i tried filters and blowing the lines back and all that kinda stuff, turned out the pipe from the injection pump to the filter ( i think 0 was only hand tight and would let enough air in at ideal to stall it or make it run like poos!!

Shit, who ever sold ya that piece of shit must be a Jaskass

But seriously, it ran faultlessly for me the whole time I had it in the Lux, I had a problem when I first fitted it that it wouldn't rev, turned out to be the manual pump on top of the filter leaking air in to the fuel line, replaced with a mate Hiace one and didn't miss a beat till I took it out for you

Sounds to me like an air leak some where

Well, seems problem is possibly solved. Went to the diesel mechanics today and they think its fixed. Will post up what it was once I've established its definitely fixed (bit of a stupid thing to have gotten wrong)

(It was a bit like my alternator issue)

Maybe his jandels are too big and he was hitting the go and stop pedal at the same time?

Was it the air filter?

Hey it sounds like you've got the fuel pump plumbed in the wrong way.... try swapping the hoses over

Took it to the diesel mechanics and they swapped the diesel intake hose to the outlet hose and vice versa, so I'd stuffed up when putting it back together. I guess the symptoms were cause by air getting in the system as it would of been sucking in from partway up the tank.
