What fishing gear do I need?

Post by nstacey »

Went for a drive round red rocks and waited while my mate went spear fishing. Next time I want to have a go at fishing. So what kind of rod etc do I need to buy to fish of the coast?

Either a shorter surf rod or a rock style rod and spinning reel will be sweet.

How short is short? Had a look at Rebel sport today and they had a 'general purpose' rod that was about 8 foot long. The surf casters are about 12 foot. Have never done any fishing apart from a day off the side of the Picton wharf when I was a kid.

I use a 14ft surf rod and a 6500 baitrunner. The long rod is good if you can't get close to the water or if theres a bit of a drop to the water as your tackle/catch won't get hung up. I also use 15kg line too so it lasts a bit longer. I have 10kg line on a spool if its a nice spot.
If you found a cheap 12ft I'd be inclined to go with that over the shorter rods. But thats just my opinion.

If you can get over to Hunting and Fishing in Alicetown, talk to John. He knows most fishing spots around the area and what gear would suit you and the area.

You dont need a lot at the south coast. A good spin set up will be fine to start with. You can through it in the car, use it if you end up going out on a boat and will cast off the beach easily

Hey Nick that looks like a good alround rod and reel package and will be good off the rocks and can also be used on the beach if you need to, It also has good capacity of 10kg (20pound) nylon to handle all those XOS snapper and Kingies

Well I went, didn't catch anything. Got a definite few biteswher my bait was bitten of the hook. I think I need some lessons. Malcolm, didn't know where you place was, was looking out for your cruiser though.
