Hippy's 80

Post by hippy_ »

The plan is to save up some more dosh and get a snorkel, lift kit, diff breathers etc.........

But first I have to fix the diff lockers and acouple of other minor bits.

Took it for a spin in the river bed and road tyres are useless!!! lol

And this is the bird nest of wiring I took out over the weekend.....

Image

It had remote starting, an alarm that work only when it wanted to and about 3 different turbo timers       but only 1 of them sort of worked!!

Slowly getting it sorted.

So I got the rear diff lock all fixed up and working...... Gave it a good old test on a muddy hill....... Both wheels spinning. Stoked!!

Now to sort out the front diff lock and..........

Thought I would also do the CV's, king pin bearings, wheel bearings, all the seals, plus overhaul the front calipers(New seals, pads etc) and have a look at the front diff, as I have the drive shafts out(stupid not too IMHO).........

Image

Nice and shinny and clean parts.....

Image

But my problem is this........

Image

Everything is undone, but still it will not come out of the housing??? Going to try again tomorrow....... Any idea's to why it will not?????

Well Andrew you were bang on the money, slid the locker pin across and the diff head came out freely. Many thanks for that.

The front locker armature looks mint as, like its never been used!!!

Personally i would stick to the bronze bush, if roller bearing fails due to moisture in oil/grease then is will quietly eat the CV shaft, bronze bush is less likely to eat it way thru, they will get warm, sweat oil/grease and be re lubed. but if the truck well maintained and oil and hub freq checked particularly with a lot of off road work they should be good

Make sure you extend the breather tube for the locker motor. My mate didn,t and killed it when muddy water got in.
If you break it... build it stronger.

I will keep that in mind........ Yeah I am going to put some better tube's on for the breathers and "T" in the lockers breather.

Todays fun..........

Got the calipers striped and cleaned, then put some new pistons and seal kits in. I did the rears acouple of weeka ago....
Image

I wasnt 100% happy with the axles and the wear on where the axle housing seal runs.....

Looks abit to worn, so I ordered some new axles X Japan, should be here in 2 weeks.......

Hi,
Forthe axles did you consider using Speedi Sleeves, they are a very thin stainless steel the pushes on over the damage for the seal to run on.

Yeah I did look into doing that, but as there is a fair amount of wear on the spline end that goes into the diff head. As I am doing all the other bits in the front end, we decided to do it once and do it properly. Once finished it should be good for another 200000 odd kms.

that bottom bar is hell awkward guy.. will hang up on silly things... have you got the ability to get a straight bit of pipe to go across rather than that "L" thingy?

sorta along these lines...

Finally got around to getting one of the tow/recovery points sorted on the rear..... Hi-tensile 20mm bolts, with a 10mm plate so it wont pull through the chassis.

Image
Image

That should be good enough for most tow/recovery jobs.

The reason why there is extra length on the bolts is, once I get a better system for towing the trailer, I'll be needing to reuse this mounting point to hold it onto the truck.

good to see ya still doin the little things on her..

in regards to the piece of 10mm plate, you'll want this to encapsulate the entire chassis. ie, have the piece of flat go from the very top of the chassis right to the very bottom. this way, it'll gain a lot of strength from the top and bottom parts of the rail. as you have it, a decent recovery may tweak the rail. granted, it wont bend it immediately, but one day... if you drill the upper holes too, then it can be used for both your intended applications.. please dont think i'm pickin on ya, i'd just hate to see a nice wagon do itself a mischief..

did you ever find some line for ya diff breathers?

I'll be working on the Track for many weeks/years to come!! Hahaha The list is long, but money is short.

I know what you mean, but as that chassis rail at the back has two different surfaces one flat and one on the angle, I had to cut down the 10mm plate to fit. What I will be doing in time and before I sort out the trailer towing position, is welding a another piece of flat to suit the angle, add some more bolts etc.....

I know you're not picking on me, like most on here, you are just trying to help out. All good dude.

EDIT........ Yeah I have sorted out my diff breathers. I will post up some pictures one day soonish....

I've got to finish off/start my other projects. As well as doing the odd bit here and there to the Truck...........

Rim width to wide......

But looks mint, but I dont want to run flares..... Lots of rethinking to do...
