Loose Rear End

Hi

When I turn corners it feels like the rear axle is loose and trying to pull the car into a slide, but it doesn't feel like the tires are slipping. It sort of feels like the axle is turning slightly kind of like 4 wheel steering. If you get what I mean.

The car is an 89 SWB leaf sprung Pajero. I've been told it could be the shocks are worn, but they are not showing any signs of leaking although they do look quite old.

Does this sound right or could it be something else like bushes. As a student I can't really afford to just change the shocks to find they were fine.

Thanks

and as said check your spring mounts first.

if yours has an anti sway bar, (my old leaf sprung one did) check that the bushes arnt flogged out, they give a particular and disconcerting "lurch" just as you go into the corner when they are worn , you can also get the same effect if the rubbers are gone on your bottom shock mounts, thats an easy thing to check though, crawl under the truck and get someone to bounce up and down on the bumper any wear will be noticeable in up-down movement at the bottom shock ring mount

my old Paj shocks where rooted when i bought mine, as in you could move them in and out with no resistance at all but even then i didnt have the same symtoms as yours, mine just shot sideways when it hit a bump and leaned a little more in the corners ... had great articulation though

Shocks are only really good for bout 60,000kms. Just had nice new heavy duty ones put in my work truck (after wrecking 3 factory sets in 140,000ks and it is a whole new truck.

Also check your rear tyre pressure
